JRA e-newsletter – 2012 Budget and the Junction

January 16, 2012 - 5:40am

JRA Community Meeting Update
On January 12, your JRA had another great community meeting.  For the first time, we held our meeting at the 11 Division police station.  The JRA executive team, on behalf of our membership, thank 11 Division for their hospitality, Detective Theresa Monaghan for her presentation on women’s safety, Sherri Rousell for her presentation on the Keele Community Correctional Centre, and Superintendent Peter Lennox and S/Sgt. Phil Van Andel for their tours of the new station.

2012 Budget and the Junction
Your JRA wants to keep you informed about what is happening in the city and how it affects our community.  The following information may help you to respond to the 2012 City budget review.   City Council is voting this week, starting Tuesday, on the 2012 budget, so write your City Council today and voice your opinion.

While this newsletter addresses two Junction-specific service cuts, we recognize that many areas of service need closer scrutiny and informed interest.  Hence, we would suggest taking a look at the many online resources dedicated to the 2012 budget and contacting City Councillors listed below to add your voice to this ongoing discussion.

The High Park Zoo
The Zoo has been a highlight of our city’s greatest park for over 100 years, and the 2012 budget proposes we shut it down.  As our Councillor, Sarah Doucette, says, “This Zoo has stayed open through two world wars and the Great Depression, and now they want to close it!”
The Zoo costs about $220,000 a year to run ($2 for each person in Wards 13 & 14), which pays for 3 staff members, veterinarian bills and food for the animals.
Councillor Doucette is working on new funding options to keep the Zoo open, which include public sponsorship, llama walks, and selling Zoo poo for your garden (the manure is currently used in the gardens of High Park.
Before these programs can take effect, the Zoo needs City funding.  This funding will have to come from our taxes, which could include some of the 2011 surplus, increased property taxes (current increase is 2.5%) or other user fees.
Please write our City Council today.

Runnymede Pool
The funding for Runnymede Pool is about to be withdrawn by the City, threatening its ability to stay open.  The pool is being targeted because it is not on City of Toronto property and Mayor Ford feels the City should not pay to operate it: “I think the problem is the school board should be funding those pools, not the city of Toronto.”
Seven similar pools in the City were also slated for closure until last week when the Executive Committee found funds for two of the pools.

Funding to keep the pools can come from either the City or the School Board, although for a taxpayer reviewing her bill they are the same.

Please write our City Council today.
