Judging from old photographs, the parks of this neighbourhood have been busy gathering places for many years. The image above of Carlton Park captures a festive day in 1914. And one of Perth Square shows a heated baseball game underway in 1920, played out in jackets and ties, with neighbours crowded at the fence.

After the success of the first pick-up soccer game last Friday at Campbell Park, it was decided to make this a weekly event.

When: Friday July 23, 7:30PM, and every Friday after that
Where: Campbell Park - South Field - meet north of Splash Pad
Who?: Anyone can play. All-ages and abilities.

To quote Craig, the organizer:

I think we can shoot for another Pickup Soccer game next Friday again at 7:30, for those who came out and for others who might be interested in coming out and enjoying a good, non-competitive run on the field. For that (and for others who might have been confused should they have come out and found loads of people already at the park), we will meet near the splash pad, between the fields. Anyone else who cares to join for an informal picnic before the soccer, feel free to join in and bring the kids - the spash pad is actually open until 7pm now, and the playground is right beside it!

More photos from last week's match are here.

There will be a street festival on Bloor St. between Lansdowne Ave. and Dufferin St. on Saturday July 24, 2010, from 1-9PM. Festival organizers are looking for volunteers, vendors, performers, and any other help with organization. Details are on the New Bloor Festival website.

Better and Better!

Once again Bloor St. will be closed to vehicles. The street will be filled with all kinds of arts, crafts, and fun activities for everyone — children, adults, and families.

Make plans now to join the fun!

Rent one or more tables to sell your art or crafts or give out information about your organization. Organize sport or art activities. Volunteer to help organize and manage the event. Perform on one of the two stages. Donate money or goods to the festival. Buy the t-shirt! Be creative!

The Perth-Dupont Community Garden will be hosting a BBQ this Friday evening, July 30th, starting at 5:30pm. The garden is located in the Symington Ave. Playground, which is accessed from Perth Ave. north of Dupont St.

We are half way through the summer growing season, and we have already harvested many good things from our gardens, from beans & beets, cucumbers, peas, radishes and many leafy things like lettuce, Swiss Chard, & many kinds of kale, right up to the Zucchinis.

It will be pot luck style, so that you can bring your own things that you want cooked on the BBQ, (hot-dogs, burgers, slabs of meat, as well as the veggies that you want roasted.

We will have two BBQs' going - one is propane, the other one will be with charcoal. The Community garden will provide the charcoal as well as some veggies and Buns, ...I will have a look at the potatoes and see if they are ready to harvest, and we can cook some of them up for every one.

More info about this event is available on the Perth-Dupont Community Garden website.
