COMMUNITY MEETING

Have your say on the 2011 City of Toronto Budget
Saturday, January 15, 2011 2:00pm to 4:00pm
Wallace Emerson Community Centre
1260 Dufferin Street

Dear Friends and Neighbours,
I am writing to invite the residents of Ward 18 to a public meeting to discuss the 2011 City of Toronto Budget.
It is my intention to use this meeting as an opportunity for local residents to share their thoughts on the city budget, including what local services and programs need to be maintained and/or improved.
As promised last fall to continuously engage local residents on important matters, I am very pleased to host this meeting that will include city staff. If you're unable to attend, there are other ways to make your voice heard and I would encourage you to visit http://www.toronto.ca/city_budget or contact my office directly about other meetings happening throughout the city.
Please come with your thoughts and ideas on how we can make our community a better place to live and work.
Sincerely,
Councillor Ana Bailão
Ward 18, Davenport
City of Toronto

Councillor Bailão's Community Office Hours are on Saturdays from 10:00am to 12:00pm at the Dufferin Mall, 900 Dufferin St., in the Abrigo Centre, Suite 104. Please come by if
you wish to speak with Ana regarding any City of Toronto matters or concerns.

Full Introduction to Ana Bailao's Staff

There was an Inside Toronto article giving a backgrounder on the young staff Ana has assembled around her:
http://www.insidetoronto.com/news/local/article/935811--ward-18-new-coun...

I did a little more research to find out about them and you can see a more fulsome backgrounder here: http://tinyurl.com/4uenssh

So far it seems Ana has shown herself to be an astute politician who keeps all her bridges intact - both to the right and the middle (Liberal), Her staff does seem quite talented, and so far my dealings with her office have been efficient and responsive.

What a nice change!

Ward18 Town Hall Meeting Results

I attended and there were about 60+ people there, a real mixed bag of people. Started a little late but budget presentation by financial staff bureaucrats droned on, followed by rightie Mike del Grande budget chief droning on in a folksy manner basically tring to sell and defend the budget. Little time for questions, but some heated ones, with few real answers. Ana did not commit to a lot.

I will be blogging my version of the minutes at http://www.ward18.ca today with more detail.

Most telling thing was that Mike del Grande explained the process of having a series of filters: 1. Staff make budget based on Mayor's guidelines; 2. Committees consider budget, tinker; 3. Executive Committee (Ford's inner circle) tinkers, approves and passes on to Council and public; 4. Last filter is public onsultations (this week). Then goes to council for debate and vote Feb 23.

Isn't it strange that unelected staff set the stage first and public is left to the last?

You can still make deputations/pleas to the powers that be at upcoming meetings:

Anyone attend this meeting? Anything important come up? I couldn't make it but sent some comments to Ana's office earlier this week.
