Jane's Walk: Walk The Green Line

This Jane's Walk will take place on Sunday May 3 at 11:00 AM. Details are on the Jane's Walk website. The walk covers a fantastic future trail opportunity to the north and east of the Junction Triangle.

As our city continues to grow in population and density, finding new space for parks becomes more challenging. Many cities are turning to infrastructure corridors to create linear spaces that create connections and add green space. Starting at Earlscourt Park and running into the Annex, the Dupont hydro corridor has amazing potential to become a linear park and trail linking communities together. While there are nine city parks located in the corridor already, many are disconnected by roads, grade changes, fences, and parking lots. On this walk we'll discuss the opportunities and challenges of realizing the Green Line vision, how a neighbourhood association is working to bring new parks to the corridor, and the importance of linear spaces for butterfly habitat. The Friends of the Green Line is a volunteer group of community members and engaged Torontonians who are dedicated to working with local residents, the City of Toronto, and other partners to realize the vision of the Green Line. The Green Line project is supported by Toronto Park People.

The walk begins at 18 Foundry Ave. in Davenport Village, south-west of Davenport and Lansdowne.

Join the people who co-designed the West Toronto Railpath to explore the story behind the Railpath and and think boldly about its potential. How can the Railpath be used as a green transportation link, as a catalyst for local economic development, as a canvass for creativity, and as a node of connection among communities? Where might bold thinking lead us? And what resources and champions are needed to get us there?

Starting point is at Dundas/Sterling. A group of people will be gathered at the entrance to the West Toronto Railpath near the sign for the path. At least one of us will be wearing a bright orange t-shirt with "Railpath Run" written on it.

This Jane's Walk will take place on Sunday May 3 at 1:00 PM (also on Friday May 1, 2015 at 6:00 PM). Details are on the Jane's Walk website.

Come explore the quirky and intriguing history of the old industrial Sterling Road! Located in the Junction Triangle, this short, hilly and winding road runs from Dundas West to Bloor St. West and houses a century old chocolate factory, the Tower Automotive Building- once Canada's tallest building, a circus school, a flag factory, an axe-throwing league, and numerous artists and designers studio's among other intrigues. We will start the walk at the north-west corner of Dundas West and Sterling, where the PATH begins and make our way north towards Bloor, pointing out specific buildings, and chatting about their histories, how they've changed, and what they currently house. This tour will also feature rare glimpses into the interiors of several artists studio's so that walkers can gain access into the world of working artists and designers. This vibrant and yet gritty industrial neighbourhood is on the brink of gentrification and changing rapidly. Come view it in transition with your hosts Catto and Elise Houghton!

We will be meeting at the North West corner of the intersection at Sterling Road and Dundas West next to the PATH. You can't miss us.

Although this Jane's Walk doesn't start or finish in the Junction Triangle, it covers a large part of it along the West Toronto Railpath, Wallace, Ave, etc. The topic of abandoned buildings in our area will surely bring up some good conversation along the way.

Started in 2007, Jane's Walk is an annual event honouring the late urban thinker, activist, and writer Jane Jacobs. On May 5 and 6 2012, free walking tours will take place in cities all over Canada, the USA, and other countries around the world.

On Saturday May 5, starting at 5:00PM, the Daffodils in Davenport walking tour, guided by Andrea Dawber and Claude Bergeron, will start at Wadsworth Park, and finish at Campbell Park.

On Sunday May 6, starting at 3:00PM, the Why Cheap Parks Are More Fun walking tour, guided by Jutta Mason, will start at MacGregor Park, widing its way via Lansdowne, the Railpath, and other places to finish at Campbell Park for a campfire.

Junction Triangle Jane's Walk 2010

Started in 2007, Jane's Walk is an annual event honouring the late urban thinker, activist, and writer Jane Jacobs. On May 7 and 8 2011, free walking tours will take place in cities all over Toronto, Canada, and other countries around the world.

I just wanted to remind everyone that out of the 170+ walking tours taking place in Toronto this weekend, there are some promising local events that are worth checking out (click their names to go to the Jane's Walk website for more details):

Murals and Public Art in the Junction Triangle
When: Saturday, May 7, 2011, 10:00AM
Where: Starts at the railway underpass on Bloor St., just west of Lansdowne Ave (1360 Bloor St. W.)
What: The Junction Triangle neighbourhood in west Toronto is bordered on all three sides by railway tracks and underpasses, making it an ideal place for public art. Our walk will explore painted murals, ghost signs, graffiti, and other public art throughout the neighbourhood.
