The 8th Annual BIG on Bloor Festival, Toronto’s most original two-day summer street celebration of arts, business and culture is happening this weekend. More than 80,000 visitors are expected to attend the two-day, car-free event named one of Toronto’s Top 20 Summer Festivals.
On Saturday, August 22 from 1 p.m. until 10 p.m. and Sunday, August 23 from Noon til 6 p.m. Bloor Street from Dufferin to Lansdowne will be closed to cars. After the Games are over, the 8th Annual BIG on Bloor Festival will takeover. For two days - Saturday, August 22 and Sunday, August 23 - it’s a mile of car-free fun stretching from Dufferin to Lansdowne.
More than 50 original hands-on cultural projects have been commissioned. Make something, learn something, engage and enjoy hundreds of distinct musical and theatre acts, art projects, games, poetry, architecture inventions, one-of-a-kind exhibitions and shops.

We want to show our thanks to the Bloor community!

On June 6, Metrolinx celebrates the launch of Union Pearson Express—the dedicated air-rail link that speeds travellers from Union Station downtown to Toronto Pearson, stopping at Bloor and Weston stations on the way. It’s a reliable 25 minute ride, with trains leaving every 15 minutes, 19 and a half hours per day.

Progress isn’t easy sometimes, and we know that the Bloor community has had to put up with our dust, our noise and inconveniences along the way.

So, on June 14, we want to thank you personally by offering a free ride on UP Express from 11 am to 3 pm. Please come down and see what we’ve built. There will be a BBQ, giveaways and lots of fun things to do for the whole family.

We’re working hard to build a city for the future, but we couldn’t have done it without you.

Bloor-Perth Underpass Art - North Side Installation

Angel Carillo (aka Cruz1) was selected by a StreetARToronto jury to curate a mural in the railway underpass on Bloor St. between Perth Ave. and Dundas St. West. The "Wallnoize 6" event on April 17-19 will see a large group of selected local graffiti artists transform the north side wall in their own unique styles. Each of the 20+ artists will get their own panel tow work with on the wall.

A few weekends later in May, another group of artists will paint the the south side of the underpass with a graffiti-styled letters, each artist painting one letter of the alphabet in their own way.

Metrolinx and the City of Toronto’s StreetARToronto (StART) program have teamed up to deliver locallyinspired
public art that deters graffiti-vandalism while adding vibrancy and artistry to the community. This is
one opportunity to review preliminary concepts and let the artists know what you want the art in your
community to look like.

The concepts will also be posted online for review and feedback at www.gotransit.com/gts from March 5th
to March 11th. The successful artist will be chosen based on various criteria, including how the
community’s input is represented in their final design.

Sterling Social (Bloor and Sterling)

Sterling Social has recently opened up at 1421 Bloor St. W, at the corner of Sterling Rd. Previously in this location was Good Times Bad Times tea/coffee shop, a succession of corner stores, etc. (here is a 1934 photo).

Sterling Social features freshly-made sandwiches, soups, yogurt, desserts, coffee etc.

Robbery (purse snatching) on Bloor at Railpath

On Tuesday, August 20th 2013, at around 9:40PM, a "violent street robbery" occurred on Bloor St. by the West Toronto Railpath bridge.

On August 23rd, Toronto Police 11 Division sent out the following alert:

Robberies - 2 violent street robberies occurred - one at Bloor Street West and Perth Avenue and the second one was at Osler Street and St. Clair Avenue West

I requested more info, and got a reply today with details:

The robbery occurred on Tuesday 2013.08.20 at around 9:40PM. The actual location it occurred was at Bloor Street West at the West Toronto Railpath bridge. It was a purse snatch type robbery. The culprit was described as male wearing dark clothing.

The matter has been assigned to the 11 Division Major Crime Unit and the investigation is ongoing.

If anyone has any information about this, please contact Toronto Police 11 Division.

Bells on Bloor (Bike ride / Parade)

Hello Junction Triangle Residents,

Our 7th annual Bells on Bloor family bicycle parade will be held on Saturday May 11, beginning shortly after 12:00noon from the front gates of High Park (at High Park Ave and Bloor St West). We will be traveling east on Bloor St to St George, where we will turn right to travel southbound to Hoskins, turning left on Hoskins to go east to Queen's Park Crescent, then turning right to go southbound to the tip of Queen's Park, where we will dismount from our bikes and walk north on the sidewalk to finish at the front of the Ontario Legislature Building. For this year, the route has been slightly changed to avoid conflict with the Freedom Festival, that will be gathering at the intersection of Bloor Street and Queen's Park Crescent.
As in years past, the family bike ride will be accompanied by around 16 members of the Toronto Police Bike Unit (arranged with 11 Division) and 4 members of St John's Ambulance Bike Unit.
