Sunday Picnic in Carlton Park

Judging from old photographs, the parks of this neighbourhood have been busy gathering places for many years. The image above of Carlton Park captures a festive day in 1914. And one of Perth Square shows a heated baseball game underway in 1920, played out in jackets and ties, with neighbours crowded at the fence.

The Sunday Picnics in the Parks will likely see less formal attire, but similar community spirit. Residents are invited to pack a picnic lunch and a blanket and spend a couple of hours with their neighbours, enjoying the common space of the Junction Triangle and perhaps even engaging in a good old-fashioned egg-and-spoon race. The events are free and casual, and take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at a different neighbourhood park each Sunday throughout July (4, 11, 18 & 25).

July 11: Carlton Park is the oldest park in the Junction Triangle. It was created in 1884 when the farm of Mrs. Jane Farr was sold to property developers who divided the land into lots for sale on Edwin, Franklin and Edith Avenue. Nowadays, Carlton Park is becoming known for its fabulous pumpkin lighting ceremonies, when residents bring their jack-o-lanterns and line them up around the wading pool to say goodbye to Halloween. It’s a great place to be in the summer too! Bring your picnic lunch to Edith Avenue between Franklin and Edwin, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

There will also be a musical performance by Andrew Cash, starting at around 12:30, as part of the Electric Train Music Series.
