A PARENT INFORMATION NIGHT WILL BE HELD CONCERNING MIDDLE FRENCH IMMERSION AT PERTH AVE P.S.
DATE: MONDAY NOVEMBER 7, 2011
TIME: 6:30 PM
LOCATION: PERTH AVE P.S. SCHOOL GYMNASIUM

Trustee Maria Rodrigues, Superintendent Curtis Ennis and others involved in the French language programming decisions will attend.

The Toronto District School Board (TDSB) offers several ways for children to learn French in the primary grades. Perth Ave P.S. students currently take “core French” which is 40 minutes of French instruction per day beginning in grade 4. For parents who want their children to take more French than this, other programs are available but Perth students must go to other schools to take them.

A group of local parents would like Middle Immersion (Grade 4 entry) French introduced to give students a choice for increased French language instruction while remaining at Perth Ave P.S. We believe this will benefit children by increasing their education options while enabling them to attend their neighbourhood school.

In partnership with the TDSB and Principal Janice Robinson, we are exploring the feasibility of introducing Middle Immersion French at Perth Ave P.S., possibly as early as 2013. “Middle Immersion” means students could choose to have 100% of their classes in French for grades 4 and 5, with mixed French and English in grade 6 and beyond. Students would choose whether they want to continue in English classes with core French, or to switch to the French Immersion option. If the Middle Immersion program is implemented, designated school pathways would be developed to ensure Perth students can continue their French Immersion program to the end of secondary school.

Why choose Middle Immersion for Perth Ave P.S. instead of other French options? Click Here.

The first step in assessing the feasibility is to survey parents of children who are in grades JK to 3 at Perth, or those with younger children. We understand that many families already filled out an initial survey on this topic in the summer of 2010 which gathered the local interest level for a French Immersion program at Perth. The survey being conducted in fall of 2011 will provide the TDSB with more detailed information about the feasibility of a French Immersion program at Perth, in particular how many students might be expected to apply for the program in the coming years. We ask for your patience and cooperation in completing this new survey.
