Friday Evening BBQ at Perth-Dupont Community Garden

The Perth-Dupont Community Garden will be hosting a BBQ this Friday evening, July 30th, starting at 5:30pm. The garden is located in the Symington Ave. Playground, which is accessed from Perth Ave. north of Dupont St.

We are half way through the summer growing season, and we have already harvested many good things from our gardens, from beans & beets, cucumbers, peas, radishes and many leafy things like lettuce, Swiss Chard, & many kinds of kale, right up to the Zucchinis.

It will be pot luck style, so that you can bring your own things that you want cooked on the BBQ, (hot-dogs, burgers, slabs of meat, as well as the veggies that you want roasted.

We will have two BBQs' going - one is propane, the other one will be with charcoal. The Community garden will provide the charcoal as well as some veggies and Buns, ...I will have a look at the potatoes and see if they are ready to harvest, and we can cook some of them up for every one.

More info about this event is available on the Perth-Dupont Community Garden website.

Outdoor cooling station at Perth Dupont Community Garden

Susan from the Perth Dupont Community Garden writes:

I just wanted you to know that the Perth Dupont Community Garden can be used as an out door public cooling station.

I have turned on the park sprinkler, and inside the garden area, near the train tracks, chairs have been set up in the shade. People can cool off in the sprinkler or use the hose to run a bit of cold water onto their hands or feet, ... what ever they need to do to feel better.

Sounds like a great way to be outside and get cooled off. The Perth Dupont Community Garden is located at the Symington Ave. Playground, which is accessed off of Perth Ave. north of Dupont St. (map).

Perth-Dupont Community Garden: Volunteer Opportunities

The Perth-Dupont Community Garden, located in the Symington Ave. Playground (north of Dupont, between Perth Ave. and Symington Ave.), will have some big projects happening this spring, thanks to a "Carrot Cache Grant". The projects involve creating a new porch around their garden shed, as well as adding solar panels to provide electricity for other projects.

They're looking for volunteers to help build this porch, especially anyone with construction skills and experience. Contact info, plus details about this project and volunteer oportunities are posted on their website.

The following announcement is from Greenhere:

Free Trees for Your Backyard!

GreenHere is excited to announce its second Free Backyard Tree project to residents of Davenport west! Building on the success of the 2008 project, GreenHere is offering a broad variety of shade and fruit trees to residents in the project area.

GreenHere will do a site assessment, plant and mulch the tree, perform a tree care demonstration and provide a resource kit, all free of charge.

In return, we ask that you commit to basic watering and care of the young tree to ensure it grows to provide clean air, shade, better soil and to allow GreenHere to monitor the growth of the tree for long-term project tracking.
