  • Junction Triangle Boys' & Girls' Club controversy   7 years 11 weeks ago

    Hi Scott
You criticized my responding at 2:13 a.m. What you don't know is that I tried to respond around 9 and that a virus was unleashed on my computer when I went on this website and that it took me a few hours to regain control of my computer. I have since had new antivirus controls installed to protect me from damage from your website. And what's your point about me working at 2:13 anyway? I work when I work. I am a volunteer, and I put in about 80 hours a month for free for the Club. There's no time frame for me, if I'm still up, or I get up, and I want to work, I work. What does my working at 2:13 a.m. mean in your world? It seems you think it means something bad.

    DEEPER PROBLEMS!

Justin Hanna became the Executive Director when Tony Pupolo quit/retired without much notice.
The shambles of the paper work fell on Justin's lap.

It's the kids that lose out in this whole process, and there doesn't seem to be any good solutions for the neighbourhood' needs .

  • Video and Photos from Friday Night's Skating Party at Campbell Park   7 years 11 weeks ago

The sunny weather probably had a lot to do with it but Sunday's turnout for pleasure skating was good too with 30 or so people on the ice with another 15 or so in the changeroom at any one time.

The Saturday afternoon skate was another fantastic event. The usual skating and campfire, donuts, etc. Someone brought chili this time too. We also celebrated a neighbour's birthday around the campfire.

I love seeing our local parks being used so well. Campbell skating gets better every year.

I'm very happy with how Friday's skating party went. Thank you to everybody who showed up. I want to say two things about the event. First, the idea for an evening skating party wasn't mine. It came from people in the community we talked to before rink season began. Two people in particular spring to mind: Roy Mitchell and Scott Dobson. Second, while it's true I was the lead for this project, it was like everything we do at Campbell, Wallace-Emerson and Dufferin a group effort. Either directly or indirectly Alain, Yo, Marina, Maricela, Mayssan, Sarah, Jutta and others made the party posssible as did the Zamboni operators who changed their schedule to accommodate the evening skate. Thanks also to the Perth library, Boo Radley's, Starving Artist, Sweet Pete's and Ubisoft for allowing us to put up posters publicizing the event.

New Years Eve was busy on Ernest Avenue with a fire that occurred just after the new year began. There was quite a lot of residents and Railpath users around and witnesses said that the Police had arrested somebody. I have no other details. Here is a website of that features 3 galleries of shots taken that night. Note that the aerial unit used Elsie Lane as a staging point to reach the fire.

We could not make it but thank you Michael and Rink Staff for helping make our area better.

Definitely was great fun! It always is, but the nighttime, the music, not to mention the soup, made it extra special! Thanks for posting the pics and video,

  • Ward 18 Town Hall Meeting   7 years 11 weeks ago

There was an Inside Toronto article giving a backgrounder on the young staff Ana has assembled around her:
    http://www.insidetoronto.com/news/local/article/935811--ward-18-new-coun...

I did a little more research to find out about them and you can see a more fulsome backgrounder here: http://tinyurl.com/4uenssh

So far it seems Ana has shown herself to be an astute politician who keeps all her bridges intact - both to the right and the middle (Liberal), Her staff does seem quite talented, and so far my dealings with her office have been efficient and responsive.

    What a nice change!

  • Bike Lanes on Lansdowne Ave. North of Bloor?   7 years 11 weeks ago

Ana's EA Justin appears not to be a big supporter of bike lanes http://tinyurl.com/4uenssh

But then he is her EA and Ana is the one who should call the shots. Good luck

I want to remind everybody that there will be three hours of pleasure skating tonight 6-9pm at Campbell rink. There will be a campfire and music. If you have an iPod and have some music you'd like us to play, we'll try to fit it The people I've talked to are enthusiastic, so it should be fun. I hope to see you there.

That's another thing that gets left out in this story. The owner of the property on Ernest is a long time businessman in the area and he put a lot of food on tables in this area. This project was in some ways a chance for him to have a legacy project but instead he ends up with a renter who tries to break a lease for no reason. They basically vacated and he had to go after them! What had he done to be treated so poorly? All he wanted to do was help and there were already other people interested in sharing the space to help cover the rental costs. You have to ask yourself would you sign a future deal with somebody who had a track record of skipping out?

And what about the teenagers from Central Tech who devoted time and energy to getting the Clubhouse ready?

And what about locals who did fundraising or spent time getting other projects to dovetail with the Clubhouse? 2 weeks before the closure they were being told everything was fine.I know, I was one of them.

There are a lot of people owed a proper hearing, explanation, and apology. The longer this festers the more it hurts the reputation of a national organization that has done great work.

  • Stop Diesel Trains: Postcards from the Edge   7 years 11 weeks ago

There were more than 100 demonstrators in front of the YMCA this morning. There were also various media outlets (Globe and Mail, City TV, CBC, etc.) and politicians of various stripes, including Cheri Di Novo (MPP for Parkdale-High Park), Andrew Cash (Federal candidate for Davenport), Frances Nunzita (Councillor Ward 11) and Adam Vaughan (Councillor Ward 20). My understanding is that Ana Bailao (Councillor Ward 18) was also there, but I can't confirm that. At the demonstration, we were also told that Mayor Ford has written to the Government asking for electrification. Mysteriously absent from all of this activity is Tony Ruprecht (MPP for Davenport).

After the demonstration, some of the demonstrators went to the Metrolinx Board meeting where it was announced that the Board was unanimously recommending electrification to the Government. This was met by cheers from the crowd, and it is definitely a small victory. This suggests that the Government should have been listening to electrification advocates 7 years ago.

After the Board meeting, Cheri Di Novo invited the demonstrators back to the Legislature for a press conference in the media room. Speaking at the media conference was Cheri Di Novo, Stephen Dorsey (from Stop Dirty Diesel Trains) and Mike Sullivan (from Clean Train Coalition).

The one thing that was clear from the media conference is that the Government's position has not changed as a result of the recommendations coming from the Metrolinx Board. The Government is still planning on buying diesel trains in February to meet their commitment to the Pan Am Games (a two-week sporting event). What has changed is that the government is now paying lip service to electrification, promising it will happen in the future. Promising, however, is not the same thing as making it happen.

Transportation Minister Kathleen Wynne told reporters today, “I think it’s consistent with what the electrification study showed. This is an aspirational end state that we’d like to see in the future.” My personal opinion is that with language such as “an aspirational end state,” and with uncertainty about the political future of the Province, we can’t let the Government build diesel trains, because we will be stuck with them into the indefinite future. As voters and taxpayers, we need to ensure the Government follows through on their own recommendations to electrify.

Thanks for the updates, i just sent him an email. How many people showed up this morning at the YMCA?

I sent a letter of support on January 18th. Haven't heard back yet.

  • Redevelopment of the Wallace-Perth Church property (Union Lofts)   7 years 11 weeks ago

    It sold for $2,000,000

Plans for a loft conversion were drawn up a few years ago ... 22 units, if I remember correctly. No idea why it didn't fly at that time.

Although I'll be sad to see the congregation leave, I'll at least be able to park on a Saturday!

What kind of music did you rollerskate to?

  • Friday Evening Pleasure Skate at Campbell Park   7 years 12 weeks ago

i would love to hear the kind of music that i rollerskated too all those years ago....i am having a flashback right now!

  • Friday Evening Pleasure Skate at Campbell Park   7 years 12 weeks ago

if you plan to come to Friday's evening pleasure skate at Campbell, we'd be interested in hearing what kind of music you'd like to hear played over the sound system. Staff will be attaching their own ipods to the system, but our tastes may not be the same as yours. Personally, I think skating to Mozart would be lovely, but I have a feeling that wouldn't be too popular. I suppose if skaters want to bring their own ipods with their own playlists we could try to fit them in. We have three hours, 6-9pm to fill.

I am not exactly sure how you "rush" into getting building permits in the first place. I have not heard of or seen one document from the City that says that the Boys and Girls Club could not use the facility as a much needed Clubhouse that would also help engage the ignored teenagers of the area and maintain existing programs. If this is one of the problems then make the document public; if it exists.
