2 Stories Question Metrolinx Logic

A news story and an Op Ed piece in the Star continue to question the rationale for how Metrolinx has "planned" the airport link.

Federal NDP member for Weston ( already pretty knowledgeable on rail issues) covers off all of the basic issues about the APL that will come back to haunt us.

Friday--last chance to fill out the Parks and Rec survey

Friday is the last chance to fill out the Parks and Rec survey...Its a bit boring but worth the time. Protect our green spaces and speak up.

" Toronto Parks, Forestry and Recreation needs your help to develop a strategic plan to guide the development and management of parks for the next five years.

This voluntary survey gives you an opportunity to provide input and should not take more than 15 minutes to complete. All responses will be kept confidential and we will not attempt to re-identify you based on your responses. "

Planning a Meeting about the Circus School and the Health Concerns related to the Building

Posted by Philip Share of the South Perth and Sterling Rd. Residents' Association:

Many parents who have enrolled their kids into the Circus School at 213 Sterling Road may not be aware of the health risks associated with that building.
This site was a former PCB transformer assembly plant - and over many years there were a number of spills - some reported and some not reported, when this building first changed hands the following email came from Public Health on the approved use of the building.

Quote -

"In addition to the above, an inquiry was made to the MOE in an effort to learn more about historical activities in the building. It is our understanding that pole transformers were assembled at this location. As the building is remaining industrial/ commercial, the MOE does not object to the activities currently taking place. If the use of the building changes to more sensitive use the owner will be responsible for ensuring that the building complies with MOE Legislation. The MOE confirmed that this building cannot be used for recreational purposes. A gym for kids is not permitted unless the building goes through a change of use and that has not been proposed by the owner nor is it expected to be proposed by the owner in the future.

I am looking to see if there is enough dialogue to set a meeting for the near future.

Local TTC Service Changes: January 2012

The news is full of stories of the expected TTC service cuts that will take effect on January 8 2012. You can read any of these articles to get a general overview of which services are affected. (Aside: Does Rob Ford remember repeatedly promising to not cut services during his election campaign?)

Media links: Torontoist, BlogTO, Toronto Star, Toronto Sun, etc...etc...

Here's a summary of local service changes in and around the Junction Triangle. Full details are in the announcement on the TTC's website.

Railpath Spring Community Run

The following announcement comes from Shazia, who is starting to organize a charity / fun run on the West Toronto Railpath next Spring:

I'm a local resident, and recently on a run on the Railpath I was musing that it would be a fantastic place to hold a fun run, with a dual purpose of bringing the community together in this great space, and raising money for something good in our community.

I have put together a business plan for a Railpath fun run/walk in Spring 2012 and I'm currently reaching out to community leaders for support. So far, Ana Bailao, Jonah Schein and Andrew Cash have committed to support this, and I will be having further discussions in the coming weeks.

I would like to pull together a steering committee to organize the event and I am looking for local community members who are interested in participating. Alternately, if you have some other way you would like to contribute as we start to plan (such as a local business, etc.) that is also helpful. I am happy to share the business plan if anyone is interested.

Your support is appreciated. More to come as we start to make this a reality!

Junction Triangle Library Project

100 Day Survey

A group of local residents is working with the support of Councillor Ana Bailao to expand the Perth/Dupont branch of the Toronto Public Library. As an important community resource, we want to determine what Junction Triangle residents want in their local library.

The 100 Day Survey is ten questions that will form part of a Community Report to the Toronto Public Library detailing design features and services that will meet area needs.

Video: November 8 2011 DIGIN meeting with Ana Bailao, Jonah Schein, and Andrew Cash

Cross-posted from the DIGIN Blog:

November 8 2011, monthly DIGIN meeting (www.digin.ca) featuring Davenport federal MP Andrew Cash, Davenport provincial MPP Jonah Schein, and Ward 18 Davenport city councillor Ana Bailao. Moderated by Jeff Winch.

Video by Vic Gedris, shot on an old compact digital camera, so apologies for the audio/video quality. The video cuts out briefly twice, as the camera has 2GB file size limits (I don't think much was missed).
