On Monday November 14th at 8:00am, there will be a memorial for Jenna Morrison, the cyclist who was killed by a truck on November 7th. The memorial will take place where she perished, at the corner of Dundas St. West and Sterling Rd. (southern end of West Toronto Railpath).

A local group of neighbourhood cyclists are riding down together:

"Hello friends and neighbours,
A number of people will be riding down the railpath to attend the vigil for Jenna. The meet-up is happening at Dupont & the railpath shortly after 7:30 and we will leave at around 7:40/45. Please come and join us if you can."

Cyclists riding from other parts of the city are meeting at Bloor and Spadina at 7:30 to ride over to the memorial site.

The memorial has been organized by Advocacy For Respect for Cyclists.

Some more details about Jenna and this heartbreaking incident can be found in the National Post.

Ms. Morrison was married and the mother of a three-year-old son according to one source. She was expecting her second child.
The crumpled mass of bits of steel that had been Ms. Morrison’s bicycle and a trailer in which she pulled her son, which lay at the scene Monday night, included a child’s bike helmet hanging from the handlebars, with a Spiderman design on it.

I thought I would ask if you could post a notice about a new Tea and Dessert spot that just opened on October 31st, it is the GTBT (Good Times Bad Times Cafe) owners Juan and Marco have a large selection of great teas and home-made desserts, they also have a book exchange and games for patrons to play, plenty of seating available it has quickly gotten very busy -they will be getting WiFi soon and it is open late !! – Another great addition to the ever changing landscape that is Bloor west of Lansdowne.

Their address is 1421 Bloor Street West at the corner of Bloor and Sterling Road.

...and wrote some more :)

The latest arrival in the Bloor and Sterling Road area is the GTBT Cafe - it is a Tea Shop with home-made desserts, Juan and Marco opened the doors on October 31, and business has been building - this is a great spot to sit and read, play a game - apparently chess competitions are coming to the spot.

It has a very quaint feel and they are really happy to have found a home in our neighbourhood.
they are testing the hours but it looks like they are open from 7am to 10 pm most days.

This is where the short-lived "C-Store" variety used to be. It now has that wonderful un-earthed "8-11" sign! Check it out if you get a chance.

6th Annual Pumpkin Lighting in Carlton Park

From Shelly at Carlton Park, posted to the Carlton Park People's Auxiliary Facebook page:

PLEASE JOIN US for our annual Pumpkin Lighting in Carlton Park (on Edith Avenue) on Tuesday, November 1st, 2011, starting at 6:30 p.m.and continuing to midnight.

Bring your jack-o-lanterns (with a tealight inside), line them up around the splash pond, and light them in a dazzling display of Halloween creativity that will delight children and adults alike.

At midnight, the lights will be doused and the pumpkins left at the park for the City to pick up the next day for composting.

Children have a wonderful time dashing about and playing with each other in the twilight, while adults have a chance to visit and get to know their neighbours in this fun community-building event.

So invite your friends and neighbours, bring a thermos of hot cocoa or cider and your pumpkins, and come enjoy this creative community gathering before we all hibernate for the winter!

Jonah Schein wins Davenport Seat

Congratulations to Jonah Schein, our new MPP in the Davenport riding. (Results are still trickling in, so I might have to update this post in the morning, but I think we can call it now.)

So, we now have a Liberal minority government in Ontario, and our previous Liberal MPP has now been replaced with an NDP member. What will this mean for the future of Davenport?

Jonah Schein was was one of the few Davenport candidates to speak out strongly for the immediate electrification of the Airport Rail Link. As an opposition member in a minority government, how effective will he be at bringing this about? With the NDP holding a balance of power in this minority government, maybe they can push strongly on this issue?

What are your thoughts on these results?

Should be interesting to see how this all works itself out.

Video: Davenport Candidates Meeting at DPNC

Here is a complete video of the September 29 2011 Davenport provincial election candidates meeting at the Davenport Perth Neighbourhood Centre. Candidates from the four "major" parties were invited to participate: Frank de Jong (Green), Cristina Martins (Liberal), Kirk Russell (Progressive Conservative - did now show up), and Jonah Schein (NDP). Later in the evening, Communist candidate Miguel Figeuroa and independent candidate Mark Jagg were invited to the stage.

The format was simple: It was basically a Q&A session rather than a debate. Questions were submitted by various community groups and each candidate had a chance to answer it. Towards the end, questions were taken from the audience.

I counted roughly 150 people in the audience shortly after the meeting started.
