  • Flowers and plants stolen from front yard   7 years 34 weeks ago

Wow -- wonder if this is the same thief who stole my newly planted cluster of forget-me-nots the day before Mother's Day. And snipped off some tulips too. I always assumed they served as an easy gift, but maybe they were for this person's garden. Hard to imagine people who grow things could also be people who steal things. Would love to know who the culprit is!

In my opinion, the consistent hot topics in ward 18 are:

    1. Respect for citizen consultation, councillor-community relations (same thing). We need a representative who will inform and involve us before things happen that affect us. "Don't Do Things TO Us... Do THings WITH Us"
    2. Development and Planning. Just look at the heavy emphasis on the 'Brownstones on Wallace" discussions, the concerns about revitalizing business in our ward, the closing of schools like West Toronto. Obvious to me, residents want not just a say but some power in what will happen.
    3. Taxes, User Fees, Budgets... MONEY issues: Mayor hopeful Rob Ford is popular because of his 'penny-wise' ways but is a swing to the right a good thing for ward 18? We need more spending on programs to improve our ward but where and how will that happen?
    4. Transit, just getting around, bike lanes, complete streets: A common theme for the whole city but is this really a local issue for ward 18? Still, it does affect us too.

    The "Not-So-Hot but Should-Be" topics:

    5. Pedestrian Safety: Our population is aging dramatically, lots of seniors slowing down the 'car-centric' city we live in, too many injuries and deaths - many which have happened within our ward. Which candidate has the solutions?

    6. Poverty, affordable housing, homelessness, food bank hunger issues: 1/3 of our residents have to less than $30,000 a year in an expensive city. Many of our residents are extremely low income, living on less than $12, 000 a year and/or may work in insecure temporary, no benefits, seasonal jobs. Housing costs are rising yet abandoned properties in the ward are everywhere. A LOT of people use food banks to survive but the food banks have supply issues that can't match rising demands.

    7. Better Ballots, Changing How We Elect Representatives, Democracy, Voter Apathy:
Last election only 35% of us voted! Elected people get in with as little as 15-20% of the ward wanting them. The system is skewed towards property owners, not residents. Did you know that someone who lives outside our ward but owns property here can vote? Worse, their spouse can vote too. Rental people, tenants are second class voters. How is this a fair representative system?

    8. Animal/pet bylaws, overpopulation of abandoned, stray and unwanted feral cats. This is a city-wide issue as evidenced by this recent documentary: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b9x1sOzaYU0 We must all have seen the scandals with the old Toronto Humane Society and the OSPCA. Don't pet owners vote?

    9. G20, civil rights issues: We had a summer of blatant civil rights abuses with the G20 protests. Sure, it didn't reach much into our ward, but shouldn't we all be concerned with this?

This is the problem with elections. There is a push to boil things down to at most the top three issues and ignore the rest. We should remember we are electing someone to power over us for many years. I think it's silly to decide on a few issues... we need to know we can TRUST the winner to handle issues well that haven't even cpome up yet!

NOW Magazine has given Zocalo a glowing review this week:

    Loco for locavore
ZÓCALO BRINGS A SUPERB LOCALLY SOURCED CARD TO THE JUNCTION
    BY STEVEN DAVEY
Stranded in the no man’s land between railway lines, the Junction Triangle has long been the west end’s wrong side of all three sets of the tracks, a nabe of abandoned warehouses, boarded-up storefronts and starving artists’ garrets. Who would’ve imagined that this rough-’n’-tumble neck of the woods would be home to the most exciting new kitchen in town?
    ...
Chef Joel MacMillan’s culinary CV includes five years as sous at the Rectory on the Island, a stint in the AGO’s production kitchen under Anne Yarymowich... and that’s about it, other than cooking at home growing up in northern Ontario. (“There’s nothing else to do.”)

He really steps up to the plate with what he calls “broken-bread sandwiches.” Imagine extravagantly deconstructed sandwich-and-salad platters built to share, Ethiopian-style. Price them at $10 per person and it’s a full-on foodie feeding frenzy.

  • French Immersion and Grades 7/8 at Perth Avenue Public School   7 years 35 weeks ago

The Pump Up Perth campaign has an article written about our cause at insidetoronto.com. We hope this article will be published for this Friday's Villager newspaper and reach out to more parents.

Thank you Lisa Rainford for a very positive article.

  • Angel Cafe at Symington and Wallace   7 years 35 weeks ago

Angel's is a pretty relaxing way to spend a Saturday morning with a coffee and the paper. Its amazing how many new customers are discovering it. Great to see some new flavour and tastes in the hood.

  • Worst Intersection in Toronto: Bloor and Symington   7 years 35 weeks ago

This intersection is a complicated setup and I am not sure what the solution is. I use it a lot and generally don't have any issues with it but I do agree that non-locals, especially drivers, are often confused by it. As a word of warning, when I lived in Parkdale people complained about Queen and Lansdowne for 20 years. They added a two phase light and now everybody is complaining again because things traffic is way slower and people are still getting stuck in between the two lights. Queen and Roncy is also confusing for many people but they just cant come up a solution that works. Its easy to say just call the Councillors office but making changes to a main arterial road is not easy to do and sometimes has unforeseen results. I agree with Vic and would like to see the left part of Sterling physically blocked to stop people from parking or making illegal right turns. Other than that I don't really know what else one could change.

When people shout "get something done", what exactly do you want done ?

  • Worst Intersection in Toronto: Bloor and Symington   7 years 35 weeks ago

I CANN'T TELL YOU HOW MANY TIMES I HAVE PHONED GIAMBRONE'S OFFICE TO COMPLAIN ABOUT THIS INTERSECTION. MAYBE IF WE STAND TOGETHER SOMETHING WILL GET DONE ASAP.

  • Worst Intersection in Toronto: Bloor and Symington   7 years 35 weeks ago

I think the media is getting the address wrong. The alleyway shown on the CityTV website, is actually the alleyway on NORTH Perth, behind the 3-Jit Variety store.

    Images from Google Maps:

Alleyway on NORTH Perth (matches photo on CityTV website):

Alleyway on SOUTH Perth (totally different look):

Regardless of which alleyway, it's still very disturbing news to hear. :-(

Woman’s Body Found In West End Laneway
    http://www.citytv.com/toronto/citynews/news/local/article/90226--woman-s...

Police are investigating after a grim discovery in a west end alley early Wednesday.

A woman’s body was found just after midnight in a laneway at Bloor Street West and Sterling Avenue, just west of Lansdowne.

The woman hasn’t yet been identified and there’s no indication from police there’s any trauma to the body.

There’s no word yet when an autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death.

  • Worst Intersection in Toronto: Bloor and Symington   7 years 35 weeks ago

Sounds like something for our next councillor to add to his/her TODO list. :) Or sooner...

I would also nominate the north side of the Bloor-Perth intersection for a bit of a fix-up: Re-paint the stop line and crosswalk (maybe zebra-stripe it?), and maybe even go so far as enforcing the stop sign once in a while.

    Movie gossip from hollywoodreporter.com:

TORONTO – Steven Spielberg's untitled alien-invasion drama pilot has landed in Canada for a two-week shoot.

The DreamWorks Television project for TNT about a group battling an occupying alien force is shooting in and around Hamilton, Ontario.

The Noah Wyle-starring pilot is executive produced by Spielberg, who last week was on location at the Royal Botanical Gardens in Burlington, along with Darryl Frank, Justin Falvey and writer Bob Rodat.

Carl Franklin is directing the pilot, with Cyrus Yavneh producing.

  • Junction Triangle Lofts @ 229 Wallace   7 years 35 weeks ago

I walk by the lofts every couple of days to see the progress. I like the design -- I think the low build, the red brick, and the general style of the building are complimentary to the neigbourhood and its industrial past. I also think interesting work spaces encourage creativity and make a neighbourhood interesting. Overall, I feel pretty good about this one, and I can be a harsh critic when it comes to development.

  • Worst Intersection in Toronto: Bloor and Symington   7 years 35 weeks ago

That sign showing people how to proceed into the intersection from Sterling is useless. First it was twisted so it wasn't visible from Sterling, and now that it's twisted back to face Bloor, the diagram is so small as to require binoculars (or maybe I need a new set of contacts). What this intersection needs is some new paint, clear signage, and better lights (similar to Lansdowne and Queen, so we know the City knows how to do it). And there's no reason pedestrians can't cross Sterling when Symington has a green light!

  • Demolished: Toronto Hydro building on Sterling Rd.   7 years 35 weeks ago

    Thanks for the update, Rob.

It does make sense to clean up as much of this stuff as possible, now, before it spreads further and makes things worse in the long run.
