I for one don't want anyone to crawl under a rock. But I would like to let it be known that I think extending the park is an excellent idea. If there are others who agree, it would be nice to hear about it, so we can start to get a real sense of what the community does or doesn't want. Sometimes the voices around here are very loud (the garbage strike is a good example) and for too long that has drowned out so many of us who have a different opinion.

    Message to Jack Fava :
Please crawl back under the rock. You in no way whatsoever represent the vast majority in the Triangle. Five months ago you and your fellow neighbourhood trash were frothing at the mouth screaming "save our park for the children!!!" Now, after much neighbourhood input and plenty of warning from the boogey man, Adam Giambrone, your and your stooges are again frothing at the mouth. However this time apparently, after seeking out right wing media, we have too much parkland!!! Make up your mind. Better still get a hobby. Your efforts at the grassroots level and attempts to remain in the limelite have caused much anger and division in what is for the most part a wonderful neighbourhood.
Sure we have some issues, drugs, hookers, neglected properties and so on. Your rantings however have NOTHING to do with improving our little pocket here. Instead of being able to debate your ideas (I have seen you at work during community consultations) where all you can do is scream and bully you run to lame media ( the Sun) to air your ridiculous rants.
Go away. You are stuck in another century you fool. Stop trying to be a neighbourhood saviour and stick to what you seem to know, whatever that is.

    This is very distressing indeed!!

To makes things easier, here is the phone number to 11 Division Police Department:
    General Line: 416-808-1100
Crime Prevention Officer: Constable Russ Golding, (416) 808-1108

Let's do our civic duty and keep our eyes open and ourselves alert to petty criminal behaviour.

A friend forwarded me a link to a YouTube video that makes an interesting point about the government's position on Electric trains. It reminds me of the very effective campaign against the City's Olympic bid in the late 1980s called Bread Not Circuses. It is totally worth checking out. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yoQcBJ2f6No

  • Davenport Diamond grade separation update   8 years 22 weeks ago

Closing Wallace would be hard as it would really hem in the JT and possibly create response issues for fire and police. Never mind the firestorm of protest that would erupt. I just don't see it happening. I think a trench would be the least worst of the worst.

  • Davenport Diamond grade separation update   8 years 22 weeks ago

I specifically asked the GO people about this at the Pelham school night when they presented this and they said the ridership numbers weren't there. I think it would be terrific to be able to go north in the mornings to York without having to take a long ttc bus ride.

  • Davenport Diamond grade separation update   8 years 22 weeks ago

'new, larger project scope?' I wonder what they mean by that. Has anyone heard what they have in mind?

I live across the street from Campbell Ave Playground, overlooking the tracks. Working from home, I can't imagine living through years of pile driving and being left with a huge wall/overpass as a souvenir.

While I wish they were electric, I don't mind watching the trains go by. Kids seem to enjoy and marvel at the engines.

I hope they learned something from the West Toronto Diamond.

  • Railpath Official Opening   8 years 24 weeks ago

Adam Giambrone tweeted a picture from the Railpath opening today.

Anyone else have photos or commentary from today's event?

  • Christopher Hume writes about the Railpath   8 years 24 weeks ago

Again, a hearty congrats to those who helped make this section of the West Toronto railpath a reality.
We at Boo Radley's Junction Bar & Grill are inviting anyone from the opening party to come by and have a drink and a snack on "Boo" anytime after 4pm.
In the 2 yrs. plus that we have been in business we have seen the neighbourhood transform itself from a forgotten little afterthought to what it has become, a busy, diverse, desirable destination with growth that is among the busiest and cheapest in the city. All of this whithin shouting distance to downtown!
Grassroots efforts and neighbourhood voices have been the catalyst for this growth and it is through these efforts that the community will continue to grow and prosper. Dupont St. from Campbell St west to the bridge is one the few remaining stretches in the downtown core that has a unique commercial/residential element that remains untapped. The perfect neighbourhood village isn't far away!
Thanks you to all of our regulars for dropping by for that burger and a pint, or your late night wings.
We set out to create a local where people can network with friends and neighbours and feel safe doing so, while not having to worry about being harrased by whoever.
We have managed to do that with your help.
    Thanks again.
    Boo

  • Boo Radley's Halloween Party   8 years 24 weeks ago

Boo Radleys, like Noona's and Yasi's are local success stories; people living and working in the area and putting their money where their mouths are. My wife and I had awesome lunch at Noona's today and felt lucky to live in this community. Lets support the owners that are leading the way for a revitalized shopping and dining environment. With over 350 kids on Perth each year on Halloween I might not make it to Boo's party but I hope you do.

PS. That" Starving Artist" on Lansdowne is packed every time I walk by. Anybody here checked it out? I went to Soul Food and enjoyed it, sorry to see that southern vibe leave, but is there such a thing as Caribbean waffles ?

  • Railpath Official Opening   8 years 24 weeks ago

Boo Who ? I think I know. : ) Railpath is not done and stage 2 to Sudbury Street is moving slowly along. Stage 1 took over 10 years. Now that people can see it, stage 2 wont take that long. Then its north to our friends in Mount Dennis. It will happen folks, keep calling your councilor with support.

I will be biking in the winter if plowed, if not we have out x-country skis ready!

  • Railpath Official Opening   8 years 24 weeks ago

Congrats to all of you who have fought long and hard, tooth and nail to help create the West Toronto Railpath.
We at Boo Radley's have been strong supporters of the project and have from day one offered a discount to those healthy, hearty souls who arrive at our establishment with a bicycle. That offer is year 'round!!
Hope to see you on your bikes come winter!
    Thank you from Boo

  • 2010 Municipal Election   8 years 25 weeks ago

BlogTO has a short but interesting interview with Councillor Giambrone today http://www.blogto.com/people/2009/10/toronto_through_the_eyes_of_adam_gi.... He makes it clear that he is considering a run for Mayor. It would be a shame to loose him as a councillor in what will almost certainly be a tough race for Mayor.

  • CTA find GO Transit is excessively noisy   8 years 25 weeks ago

People here should know that I have had beer with Warren and like Warren and applaud the cool stuff he is involved with in the area. We agree to disagree. Thats all.

  • CTA find GO Transit is excessively noisy   8 years 25 weeks ago

    Good point Irmina.
How we say things is important, and sometimes I focus more on the point I want to make and forget to make sure to be careful about the, um, fuzzy stuff. I do believe in being hard on ideas, and soft on people. (But it's easier said than done - I don't even claim to be good at it, but it's a great idea.)
I do think it is important to express different opinions, and establish a culture where people feel they should can express what they think.
For what it is worth, I also think Scott is smart, and therefore think him and I have a better change of finding that balance than other combatants. :-)

  • CTA find GO Transit is excessively noisy   8 years 25 weeks ago

O.k. boys. Back away from each other and go to your corners. :-)

I know you both. And both of you are smart, well read grown men, who know how to do their research and can communicate well informed opinions. Let's just agree to disagree.

    Now smile and shake hands.

    :-)

  • Metrolinx Seems To Change Story Day by Day   8 years 25 weeks ago

I would think the EA documentation needs to anticipate the most aggressive expansion that is conceivable. That would be different then the procurement decision for equipment. Procurement would need to be more closely tied to the actual service.
I don't see evidence there has been any change of plans, but numbers that have different meaning. The approach of gradually increasing service seems logical.

  • CTA find GO Transit is excessively noisy   8 years 25 weeks ago

Well, that is some interesting rhetoric. I'm sure it is generally effective. I know you are passionate about the subject, but the response seems erratic as you seem to be projecting on to me straw men that have nothing to do with what I've said.

I have no interest is why you hate the government, Go Transit, eHealth ?!?, the grade separation, or Metrolinx. It doesn't bother me, it just doesn't interest me.

Using the occasion of retracting statements about leukemia risk to accuse Metrolinx of lying struck me as a little rich. It's clear from both sides that they hate each other, the choice of behavior is interesting – a little bit.
But that's beside the point too isn't it?

I'm sure the EDF is evil too. But they post footnotes so I can check sources – see I don't trust them either, I just don't make a big deal of it.

I am not being misleading by using the term clean diesel. Your general objection to the term is reasonable. I remember choking the first time I saw the stupid commercial with the child smiling at the truck that seemed to be bringing sunshine. But there is no other term that would be as broadly recognized for a specific, somewhat obtuse technology. That is not my fault. You accused me of being misleading and I demand an apology.

Your closing argument is David Brann – emissions compliance manager who has worked at Electro Motive Diesel for 37 years. It appears his job is to make sure EMD locomotives get the EPA certification they need and to lobby against tougher standards. Particularly those that would require after treatment devices like catalyzed particulate filters that use platinum group metals. The platinum price spiked up a couple of years ago amid speculation that mines could not keep up with demand, largely due to increasing demand for pollution control. Some thought the price would reach extremely high levels.
One might think this would be a problem for railroads, but it isn't. Commodity prices never scare and railroad people. If oil prices go to $500 a barrel, most airlines and auto makers will be toast, but short of a total collapse of civilization, railroads will be busier than ever. They will be affected, but their inherent efficiency will mean they will be the last ones to be running. If the price of platinum doubles the price of a locomotive, the impact on the price of that new F150 or Camry you are looking at is going to be a bigger problem.
Catalytic converters and catalyzed particulate filters reduce efficiency (a little) and increase cost (a little – maybe 1-2%). The auto industry whined about them (and still do); the trucking industry whined about them (and they are really vocal these days); the locomotive industry whine about them. The auto industry has dealt with it. The trucking industry dealt with it. The locomotive industry WILL deal with it. Unless they can get the EPA to roll over. That's where David Brann comes in. That's your boy right? David Brann?

Was this supposed to prove I am wrong somehow?
It seems to me that American environmentalists would make better allies than industry executives. Do you disagree?

“Feel better.” What do you mean by this?

  • Metrolinx Seems To Change Story Day by Day   8 years 25 weeks ago

With Metrolinx the story changes day by day. I see the 10 trains a day increase as more of an attempt to shape public opinion than anything else. If it were true why are we rushing to spend 1 billion dollars for 10 trains? As Steve Munro has stated over and over, Metrolinx's plan doesn't add up.

  • Metrolinx Seems To Change Story Day by Day   8 years 25 weeks ago

Regarding this section of the article:

The environmental assessment talks about “a six-fold increase [in train traffic] on Day 1. Now he's saying they're just going to slowly ramp up service. This is news to us,” said the coalition's Keith Brooks.

Are they sure the enviro assessment says that? From any meeting I went to, GO / Metrolinx / their consultants always said that it would be a gradual increase in trains.

  • CTA find GO Transit is excessively noisy   8 years 25 weeks ago

Planning on future technology is always a bit dicey, that's true. But you have to admit that scaling up truck technology is not exactly like they are expecting the moon here.
The pile driving is a real problem. I'm not inclined to make excuses for GO. I just think there is something a little funny about the CTA announcement. They seems to leave themselves quite a bit of wiggle room, and if they were that upset with Go they could have said so a month ago.

  • Toronto Public Library - Perth/Dupont Branch   8 years 25 weeks ago

Everybody at that branch does a great job and they do an amazing job with the space they have. They deserve all the credit they can get. They have computers and tons of magazines and books from gardening to bicycle repair plus lots of local info. If I won the lotto I would buy the building next door and double their size.
