The toxic chemicals have already taken its toll on you. Don't tell me how great the junction is today..its still a hell hole...just go to Pelham Park Gardens on a Saturday night and see for your self. You bunch of yuppy idiots moved to the junction because the housing is still cheap and cheap for a good reason. People with any brains moved out of there decades ago. Like l stated before all my relatives have either died or are dying of cancer because we all lived in that damn junction!
So when you people are diagnosed with cancer in a few years...remember you were warned.

First off it's called Junction Triangle. Second most of the industry is gone and the soil has been cleaned up and is being redeveloped. Crime is way down and lots of new families live in the area. There are new pubs and businesses and the community is working towards major projects such as Railpath 2, a new playground, and a new Library. Since you have not been here in over 40 years you should pay a visit and and develop an informed opinion as to whether people are on drugs or not.

As l read all your comments, l have to come to the conclusion that everyone living in the junction or who plans to move there, must be on bad drugs. Having lived next door to St. Rita's on Edwin, back in the early 60's to the mid 70's, the only memories l have of winter was yellow snow. In fact, until l was 10, l thought the natural colour of snow was yellow. There were so many foundries in that area, the pollution and toxic chemicals released into the ground and atmosphere was alarming by todays standards. Now most of my relatives, including my uncle and dad, have passed away with lung cancer...so for all you dumb dreamers who want to live in the Junction area...you better wake up.

It says on a sign in the mall that Price Chopper is being converted into Fresh Co.

  • Junction Triangle Boys' & Girls' Club controversy   5 years 40 weeks ago

Last night I enjoyed dinner with Tony Puopolo, the retired Executive Director of the Dovercourt Boys and Girls Club. We were joined by a former member of the Club's Board of Directors to say thanks again for everything and congratulate him. After a two year battle, Tony just won a court settlement against the Dovercourt Boys and Girls Club for non-payment of portions of his retirement package.
The total waste of time and other people’s money and just the sheer mean-spiritedness of the Club is another example of the appalling behavior of this organization and members of its Board. As we have experienced before, it took a big stick and legal intervention to get the Dovercourt Boys and Girls Club to do the right thing and honour their commitments.
So congrats to Tony. Many of you will know we only have a Boys and Girls Club (in large part) because of Tony Puopolo. He has been through a challenging and completely unjust ordeal. I’m certain he left dinner knowing he still has lots of friends in the neighbourhood and not everyone living in the Junction Triangle supports or condones the bully-style management of this public service organization dedicated (some days) to serving children in the area.

I walked past Standard the other night and took a look at the signs. It is not re-zoning it is Consent Application. It states "to obtain consent to the creation of an easement" and "to sever the property into 2 lots, create easements + partially discharge a mortgage(s)".
There are 6 signs posted, and all have a date of July 11, 2012 for when it will be decided at city hall. It is being held at 3pm in meeting room 2 on the second floor of city hall. For more info call 416-392-7565.

    Also from Ana Bailao's Website:
"Currently, a Site Plan Amendment Application has been submitted for this site which seeks to consolidate the garbage area and improve pedestrian connections and landscaping."

I do not believe it is connected to Dolarama's opening in Galleria Mall, and Dolarama on Lansdowne appears to be staying open.

Other interesting news is that apparently Price Chopper is also leaving the mall.
Anyone know what will come of the Zellers and Price Chopper spots?

I've been trying to get one of those Parkdale shirts for quite some time now. Do they still sell them?

  • Sterling Dundas Intersection Community Meeting   5 years 40 weeks ago

I would never want to delay or take away from RP 2, but I think RP 1.1 would be an important step and if this meeting could be used to turn up the heat for either I would be all for that.

Congratulations to everybody who made this project happen. I know many people have been involved in planning, advocacy, gardening, and clean up. Not to mention the events that help make this a magical place.

I suggest you read www.railpath.ca as both things you suggest are currently being studied. Also look for an upcoming story in the Villager that will be posted here.

[I edited Scott's post to fix the URL typo. www.railpath.ca is the correct link, which goes to railpath.wordpress.com --Vic]

  • Sterling Dundas Intersection Community Meeting   5 years 40 weeks ago

Why not extend the railpath beneath Dundas West and connect it to Sorauren Park and Sorauren Ave?

And, as a selfish resident of Carleton Village, why not also extend the railpath north past Cariboo to connect with Old Weston Road or, better yet, Junction Road (if it ever opens again) ??

  • Sterling Dundas Intersection Community Meeting   5 years 40 weeks ago

I've seen more than one wipeout as people on bikes riding from the street to the railpath as they try to adjust thier course on the crushed rock. The loose surface is evil in this location, and it should be paved. In addition, more thought needs to be made about how people on bicycles enter and leave at this location.

Lastly, I see large number of people making left turns at this intersections. This is a particularly tricky manoeuvre while on a bike. I'd like to think that bike boxes would likely help out here quite a bit.

  • Sterling Dundas Intersection Community Meeting   5 years 40 weeks ago

I cycle through here twice a day, taking the lane while I wait for a gap to turn left. Sometimes it is a long wait. Traffic lights would be a very welcome addition.

The feasibility study for Railpath 2 will look at these issues regarding the south side. Until that study is done these changes are temporary in terms of Railpath. That strip of road has become a race track over the last few years so we need to slow traffic down. If they put lights in then they need to square off the intersection more to stop people from sliding around corners as they do now.

I believe that the College intersection is under revue (I would like to see the one block that goes uphill and joins Dundas become one lane).

  • Sterling Dundas Intersection Community Meeting   5 years 40 weeks ago

I am very concerned about this intersection and it's fifty ways to get yourself killed. To me the glaring omission in these recommendations is a direct access to the rail path from the south side of Dundas. This would probably be complex and expensive but I think it would remove pedestrians and cyclists entirely from a dangerous situation. The biggest obstacle might be the owner of the land across from the intersection but they would also be the biggest beneficiary with increased pedestrian traffic past a commercial property.
I also thought the intersection with College was being reviewed along with this one.
There has also been a suggestion that a bike lane on the bottom end of Stirling might remind motorists to leave a little extra room at an intersection likely to have more pedestrian and bicycle traffic than one might expect.
I don't want to make the perfect the enemy of the good and getting some action is very important, but I'm a little underwhelmed by the proposal.

  • Metrolinx Georgetown South Electrification Update   5 years 41 weeks ago

The Clean Train Coalition website has a lot of useful background info on this issue. Of note is the massive increase of the number of trains for the airport AND the increased number of regular GO trains. The bottom line is that an electric system would be a better transit option much like what Vancouver has and Montreal is proposing and of course not produce diesel emissions.

Before somebody jumps in and starts saying there will be emissions elsewhere, remember that as the electricity grid gets greener, as it is, then the source of electricity gets greener. With diesel you are locked into a polluting fuel based infrastructure from ground to storage to use. Electricity is the greener choice and that is why everyone else has abandoned diesel for electric commuter rail.

Before somebody says that Metrolinx will be running "clean diesel", read the WHO's announcement on diesel. Metrolinx thinks that "cleaner diesel" is some kind of victory for healthy air but zero diesel is what is the best thing to do.

So check out the Clean Train website, especially their FAQ page for some detailed information.

Junction Triangle is featured in this Global News story. The diesel issue wont go away and it's probably going to heat up at Queens Park in September with a motion being put forth to electrify day one.

  • Galleria Mall   5 years 41 weeks ago

Someone mentioned there are signs near the Standard lofts indicating re-zoning, does anyone have more details? Could this be the reason a new Dollarama is springing up in Galleria as the on on Lansdowne will be gone based on this re-zoning?

  • Metrolinx Georgetown South Electrification Update   5 years 41 weeks ago

I have to be honest, I wasn't much of a fighter against Diesel trains because I thought hey, they would just run along the run (albeit, more often) like they already do. But a five metre wall to disconnect a great community fixture? What the fuck.

    So, what can we do?
