  • Nitta Gelatin factory emissions increasing?   5 years 28 weeks ago

    Two items.
    1. Michael Vieira, Constituency Assistant of the Office of Ana Bailão, City Councillor, mvieira2@toronto.ca (416) 338-5277 has been really helpful and following thru on trying to get some improvements. Nice to see this.

    2. I spoke to a Nitta supervisor, as did Michael, and he was was quite open. The supervisor even gave his cell number so we can reach him more easily: 416 873 1533. He explained that he's spoke with Mike and got call from Bayo's office. Had meeting yesterday on how to address this and came up with strategies to explore. Short-term: will investigate possibility of filtration as of next week. Long-term (months): scrubbing systems. They are supposed to install the new filters real soon.
So why the intensification of smells over last month? There is a new process that is causing the extra odors. It is a revenue-generating processing of protein and grease which used to be hauled away but is now processed in-house and sold to food/pet-food companies. The process can take 2-6 hours, and can happen at any time of the day. The are not sure about toxicity in the odors. [Not good I think] They did not do study of odor before installing the process. The process is a pilot for now as they investigate its worthwhileness. No, considerations of community had entered into the creation and implementation of the process but will now. Stopping the process is one of the options, but the ameliorative possibilities will be explored (filters etc).

He will send an email to Mr. Stevenson at Envir. Min. indicating that we talked and expects to get ok's from him.

  • Galleria Mall   5 years 28 weeks ago

Yes Jack that's exactly what I meant...but then again, considering the massive amount of development in the area, they will need a bigger location than the one that is currently there...that Jack is not a joke!

  • Galleria Mall   5 years 28 weeks ago

Jack, I think you are missing the joke which was "lets have a bigger LCBO". I dont think the writer actually has anything against those stores. I for one would like a bigger LCBO there too.

  • Galleria Mall   5 years 28 weeks ago

Just because Anonymous doesn't go into the stores to shop or have a coffee doesn't mean others can't. Why should they knock it down because one person who doesn't want to use their name say so. I seen people people shop in those stores and have coffee as well. WHO ARE YOU????

  • Galleria Mall   5 years 28 weeks ago

The Freshco is shaping up to be a great alternative to the eventual Metro...looks like the Dollar store is about ready to open...and word was Canadian Tire was going into the old Zellers....now if they can only knock down those two stores(pet and cafe) to make the LCBO expand...

  • Condos vs. chocolate in West-end land use fight   5 years 28 weeks ago

This is a dirty move by Nestle's PR hacks that have been recently hired to make this an "issue". Where has Nestle been over the last 3 years of public meetings and private consultations with Castlepoint? In the years that I have been following development I have rarely seen a developer go more out of their way to explain their process and to make concessions. Where was Nestle?

Industry has been leaving our area since 1980. Industrial land has been converting to non-industrial uses all along the rail corridor. And long time industrial users are "grandfathered" when nearby zoning changes (thats why Solways Metals on Ernest cant be closed down). Hasn't anybody at Nestle noticed this trend? They just found out weeks ago?

And the use of "Jobs vs. Condo's" is pure BS as people who have gone to the Castlepoint meetings would know. It is a cheap attempt to paint the development as elitist by using the word "condo". The reality is that the Castlepoint's development is mixed use and will bring far more jobs to the area, news businesses, and housing for an area where housing is in short supply. Why should the people of Sterling and Perth be forced to live near abandoned land or low use storage facilities instead of a vibrant community? Earth to Nestle, industry is GONE and not coming back. Earth to Nestle, mixed use is bringing modern jobs for the future. Its called change and you cannot stop it.

Some might argue that Castlepoint has been very open and active in the community as part of their "game" to win approval although from what I have seen the revitalization of abandoned land to mixed use is overwhelmingly popular anyway. But at least the Castlepoint people have been honest enough to face people in person instead of sneaking around putting misleading mailings in mailboxes like Nestle has done. And at least Catlepoint has presented a plan based on facts rather than trying to scare people.

Nestle you make sweets, but your attitude is bitter.

  • Condos vs. chocolate in West-end land use fight   5 years 28 weeks ago

Nestles and their fort apache approach to trying to intervene in the last hours is hardly community building - and given that they have had 3 years to be part of the community dialogue on this project ... Their speaking out now has more to do with the delayed reaction to projects on Ritchie ' Golden and their recent loss at St Helen's just suddenly hit them they are needing to become a real part of a neighbourhood, however , rather than participate in the process they decide to hire a lobby group to pick up the gauntlet and try and create division.
We have community support for this Castlepoint project as well as 3 years of resident input .
Castlepoint is on the right side of this argument and clearly Nestles has decided to threaten to up and close - they have already spent $10. Million in making this a nut free facility - they are just sabre rattling for the sake of trying to either slow the changes to the neigh our hood or to have the city offer them concessions that Cadbury is not getting.

  • Train Wall Horror Show   5 years 29 weeks ago

    From the story linked....

"We all know that diesel is massively expensive so if we can move over to electric trains, not only are they greener, they're also cheaper and also they are lighter too, so what that means is that when they are on the track they don't damage it so much, so maintenance costs go down too.

Rail electrification is an important part of the Department's carbon strategy. Typically an electric train emits between 20% and 35% less carbon per passenger mile than a diesel train. This benefit will only improve as the electricity generation industry reduces its carbon levels. Electric trains also have zero emissions at the point of use, of particular benefit for air quality in pollution hot spots like city centres and mainline stations such as London Paddington."

Its sad that everybody else gets this but Dalton McGuinty. If you search online you find that the case for electric is over and done with except here in the dark ages.

If you missed the Train Wall Horror Show on Sunday, a display panel detailing the location of the walls, the material options for the construction of these massive barriers along with details about this Pan Am Games legacy project can be found at the Perth/Dupont branch of the Toronto Public Library (1589 Dupont Street). Please take a moment to drop by.

  • Train Wall Horror Show   5 years 30 weeks ago

CTV News has posted a story about the diesel airport rail link following Sunday's Train Wall event. http://toronto.ctvnews.ca/residents-make-another-plea-for-electric-train...

  • Train Wall Horror Show   5 years 30 weeks ago

Hope you'll bring your camera on Sunday for the Train Wall Horror Show in Perth Square Park from Noon until 3 p.m. Pose for a picture in front of the Train Wall and show your friends how the Pan Am Games is going to divide West Toronto with 16 feet, four inches of ugly.
Our event is free, family friendly and open to everyone, but be warned, the images are disturbing.

The authour told me he loves the area and is sorry that he was a bit off on the names.

  • Train Wall Horror Show   5 years 31 weeks ago

Electrification would cost about 440 million dollars today and could be built by the time of the Pan Am Games as described in public by Metrolinx's electrification consultant. For reasons that nobody can understand we are supposed to wait till some unknown future time and electrify and pay way more. Its funny how easy it is to blow 180 million cancelling a power station during an election but 440 million that even Metrolinx says is good value is the impossible dream.

As per Metrolinx's own studies an electric system would provide the opportunity for more stops, more revenue and more economic activity not even including the production of Canadian Bombardier electric trains made right here in Ontario providing Ontario jobs and tax revenues.

The current plan is a 3ard string solution to a 2 week sporting event that nobody cares about. Why cant we have a modern solution that benefits taxpayers and commuters for the next 100 years? Just like every other city upgrading or building new commuter systems everywhere in the world?

Road tolls? Great I use them all the time when I ravel in the land of the free south of the border or in Europe. Bring them on. That doesnt mean the provincial government gets to waste further money.

  • Train Wall Horror Show   5 years 31 weeks ago

Of course transit costs money and I would like to discuss this issue with you more, but unless you think this is East Germany and you need to conceal your identity, there is no point in attempting to discuss the matter when you hide behind anonymous postings. Is there some reason you can`t put your name on your comments?

  • NOISE LEVELS   5 years 31 weeks ago

I am sick and tired of the residents of 217-20 ELSIE Lane thinking that it is acceptable to crank music, and have parties until all hours of the morning. I have now filed 2 complaints with Toronto Police and a complaint with the City. I have also contacted the property manager this morning. Something needs to be done to people that have a lack of consideration for others. Being kept up till 5am on a Tuesday, when 90% of the population must go to work the next day, is beyond inconsiderate. I am fuming mad with the childesh behavior of these residents. If you have been bothered by the school age antics of someone in the complex call 311 and complain to the city. You can also complain to the Toronto Police and email petert@taft-forward.com. I shouldn't have to suffer in my own home, and neither should anyone else, due to a few selfish individuals. I am also meeting with a lawyer this week.

  • Train Wall Horror Show   5 years 31 weeks ago

    You don't want train walls?

Why aren't you advocating for a GTA sales tax to help pay for transit? Why not congestion charges, road tolls, etc?

Because electrification costs money. Money that we don't have, and money that needs to be shared equally with all of the GTA's transit projects.

  • Train Wall Horror Show   5 years 31 weeks ago

The government rail authority Metrolinx has posted images of the train walls that will be built through the Junction Triangle along the West Toronto Railpath in 2014 as part of the massive diesel train expansion now under construction http://www.gotransit.com/gts/en/docs/GTS_Operational_Noise_and_Vibration...
If you're struggling to comprehend just how massive (5 metres tall/16 feet, 4 inches) and ugly these walls are, please join us this Sunday for the Train Wall Horror Show in Perth Square Park from Noon to 3 p.m.

  • JT in the New York Times   5 years 31 weeks ago

More of this needs to be posted...let's look at the positives people...we are in the midst of something very good here!

  • Letter to Dalton McGuinty - Invitation to Meet Re: Diesel Train Service Expansion   5 years 31 weeks ago

Same old Dalton. He blew a minimum of 180 million dollars cancelling a power station to win an election but cant find 400 million to electrify the airport link even though Metrolinx says it can be done in time for the Pan Am games and will generate more revenue and save money on operation costs.

    Hello earth to Dalton.

I emailed Bob Chiarelli, the minister of Transportation that nobody has ever seen in person and invited him to visit us so we can go over the fact that his own agency, Metrolinx, no longer agrees with him. Based on past performance I am not holding my breath, but come 2015 I may have to.

This should be a good party and a great chance for those who are not sure about the issue to come out and here points of view not supplied by a PR firm but by your neighbors and friends.

I hope families from the hood can make it out for this - it should be an exciting afternoon for an important cause.

  • Galleria Mall   5 years 32 weeks ago

The Metro & Shoppers Drug Mart are going in at Dupont & Lansdowne into the Fuse development (north west corner).

That's quite far from the College St. Metro, don't see how it would be a conflict.
