Now Magazine has just published a really interesting story about candidate Ana Bailao http://www.nowtoronto.com/news/story.cfm?content=177246 Not sure how a candidate can have so much support from outside the ward from a single industry and claim to be a voice for our community?

  • 2010 Municipal Election   7 years 26 weeks ago

I dont think it is a factor if the person lives near the ward but I was surprised by how far away some of the candidates lived.

  • 2010 Municipal Election   7 years 26 weeks ago

A national Post article that points out that fully one-third in the 35 incumbent councillors running do NOT live in the wards they represent.

For that matter, I wonder how many know that rules do not require council candidates to live in Toronto, let alone in their wards.

Curious, I looked up the addresses of the twelve ward 18 candidates.

The half that do NOT live in the ward are: Doug Carroll, Abdirazak Elmi, Nha Le, Kirk Russell, Joanna Teliatnik and Hema Vyas.

(all addresses in publicly available registration papers at city hall are posted on my weblog www.ward18.ca )

My own view is that if someone lives reasonably close by and/or is heavily engaged in the day to day of community life, it should not count against them.

But should there be limits? I'm thinking that the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms that speaks abouit mobility rights is the basis that allows this.

But still.... we could have a city councillor who live in Barrie under current rules....

    Thoughts?

so...Anil Gupta is not running for trustee, but trying to solicit for business? okay..uhm..good to know.

  • WARD 9 -A NEW TRUSTEE? ELECTIONS   7 years 27 weeks ago

I emailed all the school trustees asking why I should vote for them. Anil Gupta replies:
    Hi Ken!

Today I went to a Councillors debate in ward 17 at Davenport. I am a Mortgage Brokers Agent and arrange Finances for residential and Commercial properties.
Also I am a Realestate Sales Person. I was running around for few weeks and was loosing my grip in the profession I am good at. I am not doing anything for Public School Trustee but my name will be on Ballot form. I want to focus what I am good at.

If you have any client for Mortgage financing / or Realestate either buying or Selling - your referral will be greatly appreciated.

I am very honest person and I can not lie. If I make any verbal promise I always like it keep it up. Whereas Politician do not do that.. I get upset with politicians of all level of Government as they waste so much of Tax payers money. We are the highest Tax Payers
then any other country in the world.

I wish you good luck in your election for City Councillor.

Smitherman blew 1 Billion in E-health and there is no accountability and transparency- why. This money was our Tax dollars. Doesn't it hurts you? How would you feel when they take the piece of bread from the mouth of your children???

    Sincerely yours

    Anil Gupta

A reminder that a summary to the July 5 public meeting with current Trustee Maria Rodrigues and former Superintendent Manon Gardner can be found here.

A history of the Pump Up Perth campaign and online discussion is available at junctiontriangle.ca/perthps.

Please remember that the importance of both French Immersion AND grades 7/8 is to support and create a vibrant local public school in our community.

  • Perth Avenue Junior Public School: Advisory Council Meeting   7 years 27 weeks ago

    Hi,

On behalf of the Perth P.S. SAC and as a community member, you may be aware that over the summer, a committee was formed to bring programming to Perth.
Due to taking place in the summer, the majority of the school community is not aware of what is actually happening at this stage or did not partake in this.
Curtis (Superintendent) for the school will be attending to answer any questions and Maria Rodrigues may "tentatively" attend.
It is crucial that it's voiced "once again" that the community wants a Grade 7/8 and French Immersion Program at P.S.

KENT Senior Public School is closing.

REGAL ROAD is full for FI and children are going to RAWLINSON P.S.

The parents in SK to grade 6 will have to send their children out of the community.
Children in the Junction Triangle NEED a viable alternative to continue their education with the least disruption to their daily lives.

A meeting was held on July 5th to let the trustee know that there was a need for both of these programs at Perth.
This was proposed to the Central Feasibility Community but only the FI programs is being brought forth.

This is not what the school community wants!

Pls. attend and if you have any other questions, feel free to contact me at perthschoolcouncil@gmail.com

“A democracy is nothing more than mob rule, where fifty-one percent of the people may take away the rights of the other forty-nine.” Thomas Jefferson

“People often say that, in a democracy, decisions are made by a majority of the people. Of course, that is not true. Decisions are made by a majority of those who make themselves heard and who vote - a very different thing.”

Mohammed Muhit is the only other candidate I have not met. His email is muhit69@yahoo.ca but I can't find any other information. Anyone know?

  • 2010 Municipal Election   7 years 27 weeks ago

Joanna Teliatnik one of the 12 choices for ward 18 city councillor was in my neck of the ward (Lansdowne/College) today and we had a nice chat over coffee. I can see there are some things we disagree with but much more that we can agree on.

You can see a little more information about her and a photo plus email/website link here:

I believe inclusivemness so you can see links and brief information on all 12 choices there too.

No kidding Warren. I think the point has been made here and people have drawn their own conclusions. We can let people lie in the bed they have made for themselves. : )

  • Junction Triangle Boys' & Girls' Club controversy   7 years 27 weeks ago

Anyone read the recent article in the Villager regarding this issue? They say that the want to accomodate everyone at the Westmoreland location. How is that convenient? How are they going to get the kids from Perth all the way past Dufferin and Wallace? At one point they didn't want to make the kids cross Bloor St. They also said that they had a surplus of funds from the Westmoreland Renos but they can not use that money toward 45 Earnest. Sounds let our kids are going to be left behind in the end.

If you had read my response correctly it would be clear that I am not referring to Andrew Cash, a fine chap I have known since high school.

Its clear that you will use every opportunity to attack other candidates as you have done here instead of focusing on what YOU would do. I am not voting for Hema but I knew about her before she decided to run and so did some of my friends in the south part of the ward. You on the other hand I had never heard of. I suppose that when nobody has heard of you utilizing US style character attack ads might be the only way to get attention but probably not the kind you had hoped for. For a guy who claims to not be involved in politics you sure sound and act like an insider to me.

I have to question the the honesty and credibility of a candidate that invades my privacy with phones calls attacking people. I don't like it as it cheapens the political process you pretend to care so much about. Attack ads = Fail.

  • 2010 Municipal Election   7 years 27 weeks ago

2006 wasn't that long ago Joe. Being a senior staffer for cabinet ministers is into it pretty thick inside a government that is very corrupt. Where exactly do you stand? You've spent all you're time here trying to damage the credibility of others without backing up any of you're claims. In the meantime you have yet to tell us anything of substance about what you will do.

  • 2010 Municipal Election   7 years 27 weeks ago

While open debates are wonderful, let us keep candidates family and children away from the discussion. Let's keep to the issues please.

    Thank you for your cooperation.
