Volunteers needed for community bike project

The following notice comes from Gabrielle Langlois, Davenport West Bike Project Coordinator at the Davenport-Perth Neighbourhood Centre:

Hi,

I am writing to let you know about a new health promotion initiative in the Davenport west area.

The Davenport West bike project aims to create/further develop bike culture and increase physical activity and awareness that physical activity can help improve health and well being. We ran a successful pilot this past summer (13 free bike clinics) and with new funding from the Ministry of Health Promotion and Sport, will run a more developed project until the fall of 2011. From Dec. 2010 to March 2011 it will include training for volunteers (bike repair, health promotion, healthy eating, safe riding/injury prevention), and in the spring/summer of 2011 will include free community bike clinics and community rides.

Junction Triangle and the "Silverthorn" error

Toronto Star Neighbourhood Map, v4.1Toronto Star Neighbourhood Map, v4.1

There has been a long-standing error on Google Maps where the Junction Triangle has been labeled as "Silverthorn". We've discussed this ad-nauseum many times on this site and during the Fuzzy Boundaries neighbourhood naming project. Several people have submitted corrections to Google, but without any success in getting the name changed. The "Silverthorn" label has even spread into other people's maps because of this error.

BlogTO posted an article today about this neighbourhood naming error, and they discuss how it might actually be an intentional "trap" to catch copyright infringements.

From the BlogTO article:

Junction Triangle Dogs Running Wild

Sent by one of the members of the Junction Triangle Dog Owners group:

Those with dogs, looking for an off-leash area in the neighbourhood, are invited to join the Junction Triangle Dog Owners group. The group will be an easy way for dog owners to communicate and stay up to date on the proposal for an off-leash area at the north end of Perth, just past Dupont. The group is set up through Facebook, but you don't need to belong to FB to join.

Ward 18 Election Results

The 2010 municipal election is finally over, after many months of non-stop campaigning. It sure was fun to watch, at times, and there were some heated moments in the Mayoral and Ward 18 Councillor races right down to the final moments of voting. Now it's time to look forward to what our new elected officials will bring us. Here are the local results taken from The City of Toronto's election results page:

Update: Dog park at Symington Ave. Playground

As reported here on June 14th, a group of residents has organized to push for an off-leash dog park at the Symington Ave. Playground (between Perth and Symington, north of Dupont, just south of the tracks).

Some progress has been made since then, and there was a meeting held at the park on October 16th. A progress report from that meeting is posted on the Perth-Dupont Community Garden website, and states that the group is moving forward with starting a Dog Owners Association to work with the City and local residents about this.

For more information about this proposed dog park, or to get involved with the Dog Owners Association, please visit the following links:

5th Annual Pumpkin Lighting in Carlton Park

PLEASE JOIN US for our annual Pumpkin Lighting in Carlton Park (on Edith Avenue) on Monday, November 1st, starting at 6:30 p.m. and continuing to midnight.

Bring your jack-o-lanterns (with a tealight inside), line them up around the splash pond, and light them in a dazzling display of Halloween creativity that will delight children and adults alike. At midnight, the lights will be doused and the pumpkins left at the park for the City to pick up the next day for composting.

Children have a wonderful time dashing about and playing with each other in the twilight, while adults have a chance to visit and get to know their neighbours in this fun community-building event.

So invite your friends and neighbours, bring a thermos of hot cocoa or cider and your pumpkins, and come enjoy this creative community gathering before we all hibernate for the winter!

You can download a copy of the event poster here.

Last year's event was a big success and very fun for everyone who attended! It seems to be growing every year, so make sure you check it out. Some photos and a writeup about the 2009 event are posted here.
