Due to a scheduling conflict there will be a slight change to the line-up of the Electric Train Music Series. Andrew Cash will now appear on Sunday, July 11 at Carlton Park. Our series will begin this Sunday with Adam Volpentesta at Campbell Park at 12:30. Hope you can join us!
Generally very well organized and run. Basically a Q&A format again, so no real "debating" going on, but it was still a good way to figure out what these candidates are up to. Overall, most candidates were slightly more polished than last time and had more to say
I'll probably post another meeting summary again, if I find the time to type it up. For a quick look, try searching for "#ward18" on twitter, and follow some of the people involved in posting there. There was plenty of live action happening during the debate. Should give you a bit of an idea of how it went. Direct link: http://twitter.com/#search?q=%23Ward18
I roughly counted about 70 people at the start, and more filtered in...so maybe about 80 attendees. Packed room. Pretty good. But it was stinking hot in there!
Part of the issue is that the Planning Department is a well documented mess. Understaffed and short on experience they bounce from crisis to crisis without the funds to fight the OMB. Mario Silva (when Councillor) let anything get built in this area and we are still seeing the effect of lackluster design and as cheap as possible cookie cutter designs. Citizens need to be active and keep their eyes peeled. The City wont do it for us.
Our neighbourhood has to come together to pressure the developer to deliver what the artist concept portrays, the building as it is currently conceptualized is actually not bad, there are some changes to where the retail needs to be placed and the streetscape improved and roof greening that needs to be done, but with most projects that Fallus has delivered the delivery rarely has represented what the concept offered.
These areas along Bloor have the ability to absorb more residential, but we really are looking to have the area lifted up in it's visual context, so far what Fallus has delivered has been rather lacklustre.
The parking component is a much needed addition to the neighborhood and even if residents don't have cars it opens the opportunity for AutoShare or Zip (or maybe even Toronto Parking Authority to acquire space off Bloor accessible to residents in the neighborhood.
Or it allows the local residents to opt to rent indoor parking from the condo owners themselves another option that has not been available to this area.
We are at the cusp of an explosion of development in this area and we need to be vigilant to ensure it meets the needs of the area in terms of the end result such as the height of the building, the initial concept shows Brick at street level to about 8 floors up and then a glass setback at the upper levels all in all a nicer looking building than anything else currently along our stretch of Bloor (Lansdowne to Dundas West and beyond).
If anyone has an interest in what is being offered the plans are at City Hall and can be viewed by appt.
The October 25th will see us sporting a new councillor, and I would make sure all those that are interested get the opinion on this development from those seeking to represent the ward, it's important and you only get 1 chance to get it right..so let's work to get the pressure started to make sure we get what is promised and lets see if we can get a Councillor to adopt a motion that the artists concept of any future projects (exteriors) must match the delivered product or have the builder face penalties based on a percentage of overall profit on a site.
I agree. Metrolinx didn't even make a proper effort to notify residents in the community of their plans - I have never recieved anything in the mail. I don't live that far from the tracks - just far enough that I guess by law no one really needs to notify me of what is going on.
Also, who organizes community consultations during the summer if they are really interested in community consultation? It just doesn't make sense. They have also avoided all community events and protests where they could share their thoughts and process.
Also, why study electric trains as an option after the government has already produced a report and came out in favour of diesel - what is the point? Is it just another diversion tactic? Wouldn't it make sense to study electricity and then make a decision on trains, not the other way around?
It is important to keep a watch on Metrolinx as they have shown poor planning, confusion, and dishonesty from day one. Remember, Dalton fired all the elected representatives on the Metrolinx Board days before a report on going diesel came out of nowhere. A 100% anti-democratic cynical move; something more like Harper and not the Liberals we thought we knew.
Where do cynicism and truth part? With a deadline for the completion of the diesel train expansion slated in time for the Pam Am Games in 2015 and all of the necessary approvals in place, we could call this Metrolinx event part of their "Open House, Closed Mind Series."
Sharon, I can 100% say that is not true, our son in in JK at Perth is will be at Regal Road in Sept for FI. As well another class mate is also going to be at RR for FI.
I would love FI at Perth! It was a real tough choice to take our son away from a school that he like, knows and can walk to and to have to put our 5 yr old on a bus every day. I will miss the interaction with his classmate and teachers.
If you need more information, there will be a public meeting where you can ask all your questions and get some answers.
The information meeting will be held on Monday, June 21, from 6-8 pm, at New Horizons Tower, 1140 Bloor St. West, near the corner of Dufferin. You can also pick up a copy of the first edition of the new Bloor Magazine.
Very nice find Vic, as usual. Yes, a little outside of our area but still great to see. Love the one of the men in their hats. Someone in the neighbourhood had a great idea of starting a JT historical society, and working on pulling all this stuff together into one place. Hope that effort gets off the ground one day soon....

Finally no more Gonorrhea Mall LCBO where they have nothing but schnapps and very little Scotch.
Thank you again to Yasi's Place for yummy and oddly water resistant popcorn. Hope we get better weather next time.
I doubt I'll have time to do my own writeup anytime soon, so here are couple of links:
Probably
...but will they have screech?
Woo hoo! I hear they will have a good vintages sections.
I was just by the LCBO at the Loblaws/ Zellers plaza and there is a sign in the window saying Grand Opening July 19th.
Fuzzy Logos.....Aaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! : )
How about a vote and then a panel to choose the best one. :-D!!
PS I think it's a great logo....

Hey Cam
I think we can do better than that. It looks like a gallows! Maybe we should have a contest. sd

Love our logo!
That's a big step forward on Google. The second view (wider shot) looks great! Another prod or two and perhaps it will be complete.
Google has finally labelled our neighbourhood as "Junction Triangle", but they haven't removed the incorrect "Silverthorne" tag yet.
The "Junction Triangle" tag is off-center too. It's placed above Erwin Krickhahn Park, and overlaps the Wade / Jenet / Lansdowne area too.
You can see it here:
http://maps.google.ca/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=&sll=43.65889...
..and when you zoom out a bit, it's the dominant tag for the whole Bloor-Lansdowne area:
http://maps.google.ca/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=&sll=43.65889...
Looking forward to this. Any other Junction Trianglers going?
I hope to hear some good, solid platforms from the candidates. Don't know if I'll take as many notes as last time though. :)

Mind boggling, that's all I can say.

Junction Triangle will be watching.

Rail Committee reps will be there!
