  • Junction Triangle Library Project   6 years 14 weeks ago

It’s Day 51 of the 100 Day Survey to determine what services and features Junction Triangle residents would like to see in a bigger Perth/Dupont library. This is a terrific opportunity to add your ideas and comments about the library and the effort to expand it. You can take the survey online here (http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/KBN6ZGR ) or complete a paper version at the library during regular hours.
With a million dollars already dedicated to the project, change is coming to the Junction Triangle library. If you have not had a chance, please take a moment and complete the survey. Many thanks.

  • Dodge Plant Fire   6 years 14 weeks ago

I spent some time at the scene, earlier today, capturing photos and video of the fire. They're uploading to Flickr as I type this. Here's where the entire set can be found...

Thanks for sharing the history of this building, Marcel. I had been wondering what it might have been in a former life. Hopefully it is not damaged to the point where it is no longer structurally sound. Though, I have to admit, I had a sick feeling in my stomach this morning, when I saw the news that the storage facility was on fire and thought of all the folks that have stored their belongings there.

Incidentally: the Toronto Fire Service has a couple of Twitter feeds. Here's the one that I checked when I woke up early this morning, to the sound of numerous sirens in the neighbourhood...

    Marcel,

You mentioned the derailment that hit the building. John (aka Krunkwerke) has a set of photos and video from the aftermath of that derailment posted on Flickr:

Thanks for posting this. The historical background and maps were great to see.

I haven't followed this story too closely yet, but I was hoping to at least post some links to news articles later today.

I hope that everyone escaped this without injury, though I imagine some important memories and personal items were lost in the fire.

  • Congratulations Vic   6 years 14 weeks ago

Thanks guys. I was pretty surprised at that, as there are many better photos and photographers out there.

A couple of people asked me today which photo it was. Here's a link to it on Flickr:

It was taken at the entrance to the Railpath on the south side of Bloor St.

  • Local TTC Service Changes: January 2012   6 years 14 weeks ago

Sadly, I think this was/is indicative of the fact that as the neighborhood changes(for the better) so too will the services. The TTC and most big businesses don't really care about certain neighborhoods(ie:nixing the Finch Ave LRT...why?, um, think of the population of people that inhabit the area and their lack of voice). Last year I actually saw TTC officials checking the 26 Dupont route(since when?) as that was another adventure to figure out when that bus was heading east! Me thinks this has to do with the change in the Junction Tri. Before, most of the people taking these routes would rarely voice their concern. Yes, GPS probably does aide that, but I think they realize more people are using those routes and will complain.

  • Local TTC Service Changes: January 2012   6 years 14 weeks ago

The Symington bus service has been really unreliable for years so additional buses is great news. Better news is the free iPhone app "Rocket Man" which uses the buses GPS to tell you exactly when the next bus is coming. No more standing there wondering when or if a bus is coming.

    http://itunes.apple.com/ca/app/rocket-man-ttc-streetcar-bus/id421781409?...

Having used it for a few months I have found it almost always works and it predicts the arrivals down to the second.

I have to admit that I find it interesting that now the GPS info is available to the public, the Symington buses seem to run on schedule for the first time I can remember. : )

  • Toronto Coffee Company   6 years 14 weeks ago

I think these guys are friendly and efficient and the coffees are not overpriced. Meron, who serves me weekday mornings, is fast and pleasant. Not sure if the coffee is really good quality because I've only had lattes, but they certainly haven't been too hot.

    ps

I should also mention I have been to Boo's many many times and enjoy going there. I was quite surprised and disappointed by this.

  • Boo Radley's Annual Christmas Party   6 years 14 weeks ago

The nachos were not half price, otherwise there would not have been a problem. I assume you are an owner or manager but your post was also nameless. Both the servers working agreed with me that the "complicated" pricing was kind of underhanded but said they were forced to uphold the policy. Half price is simple: take the price in the menu and divide by 2. If it needs explanation then something is wrong. All this nonsense about nachos being a separate charge from the beef or veg is a lot of bs. They are not separated like that on your menu. And the receipt contained vague entries that were numbered or didn't mean anything which is why I said watch your receipt. Like everyone else I simply want honest, transparent pricing without hidden charges or semantic games. I don't want you to "make it up" to me, I would like you to change your pricing policies so that what you advertise is truly what the customer receives.

To support them would be to provide them constructive criticism and hopefully they will truly take note to improve. Yes, we are all for supporting the local businesses but indeed, they must deliver the goods.

There is quite a good barista who works most weekday mornings. She makes a very good espresso. They also have a yummy selection of baked goods. It is convenient and well located. A great addition to the neighbourhood.

    Hey Phil,

You should probably check with the City other then follow what a Blog has posted.

    http://app.toronto.ca/food2/DineSafeMain?userRequest=view_history&ESTABL...

Eduarda's Passed with a Green (as recenlty as Dec 19th) There have been better places then this that have gotten a Yellow before and will in the future. The fact that they worked to get a pass in one week sounds like they actually care about their customers and the food they prepair.

  • Thai Lime - great takeout - even nicer inside!   6 years 16 weeks ago

Critic...hardly...facts are facts...when a place gets a yellow(as recently as Dec 12) and they mention inadequate food temperature control and you're dealing with chicken, i'm not trying to be critical, it just worries me:

    http://www.blogto.com/eat_drink/2011/12/this_week_on_dinesafe_amaya_cafe...

I've had multiple experiences at Piri Piri as well where the servers used the same dipping sauce when they cleared other tables. The owner was very apologetic and offered a free dinner, but all I'm saying is many of those places get sloppy and it's unacceptable.

I've always enjoyed the food at Eduarda's too, though I've been going to Arcuense (at Dupont and Frankiln) more often lately.

I'm not going to comment on the cleanliness of any of these places, but anyone who is concerned about any establishment should check the Dinesafe listing at: http://www.toronto.ca/health/dinesafe/ [Link Corrected]

  • Thai Lime - great takeout - even nicer inside!   6 years 16 weeks ago

MY MY, anonymous person, aka:food critic.

Last time I checked Eduarda's had a Green Sign from the City. The staff their work very hard to put out food for their regulars and occusional customer like me. I don't go everyday, but at times when I don't want to cook, I buy a Chicken and other food from them. They are very nice hard working people, who serve mostly the portuguese community of the junction triangle. Comments like this makes me want to eat their even more and even more when you make comments like this and don't write your name.

Also everyone(business) is trying to make a living and surviving during these hard times. JF

  • Cafe Neon Opening Celebration   6 years 16 weeks ago

it's sad to hear that you ran into a bad server - hopefully she gets fired.

The ATM is usually put there by a third party and SOMETIMES the establishment gets a cut but usually these machines are put there for customer service, not anti customer service. I would argue there's a lot of cafe's that don't take debit to save on the charges. cash is cheaper and in the neighbourhood we'rd in I'm glad to not have to walk a mile to get a nice coffee. They aren't pulling from an enormous population so cash is king. The ATM is there in case you don't have money.

I stopped in with a crew of people. We all ordered sandwiches and they offered, if we wanted to wait a little, they would bake us fresh bread and we gladly accepted.

The sadnwiches were all delicious, nice fresh ingredients and of course -great bread. Coffee was also really nice.

I hate to hear bad reviews and I went there a while back before you did. Maybe they are too popular now which is quite a shame. I'd give it one more try and hope that your experience is a better one. Let us know what happens!
