  • Junction Triangle Library Project   6 years 9 weeks ago

So far, in the responses to the 100 Day Survey to determine what people would like to see in a bigger Junction Triangle library, no one seems much interested in Option 1 outlined by Library management - build washrooms and an elevator off the back of the main floor.
Everyone (naturally enough) is interested in “more” this and “bigger” that. We already have enough money to pay for the washrooms and elevator thanks to Councillor Bailou and the $1.1-million Section 37 contribution. Everything beyond this point will require more initiative.
While all of the other elements to the library project are falling into place fabulously, we are still looking for more people to complete the survey before the end of the month.
You only have to take the survey once. Everyone including the kids can complete a separate one. It’s just ten easy questions starting with your postal code.
It's a simple demonstration of support that will really help the library. Many thanks.

  • Vote for the Perth Schoolyard Project   6 years 10 weeks ago

I like many others this morning received a postcard letting residents know about both The Library survey and Perth School Yard contest. I noticed that it was all in English, except for 2 lines one was in Chinese and the other in Portuguese, asking people to go to the website for more information.

    Comment/Suggestion,
I would spend less on the postcard and do more on the substance of the message. I again must point out that 50% or more resident in JT/ward18, speak another language at home and many of that % don't speak or read English, and on top of that many seniors in that equation don't have a computer, which will make it very difficult for them to participate in a COMMUNITY thing. Below is something I cut from the School Yard contest, it reads
"Our area is a vibrant inner city school/community located in the South Junction Triangle. Our multicultural student population represents over 16 different language groups".
So you see many of our new immigrants don't speak engish at home, as the kids are learning English, their parents still and maybe will not fully learn English.

So what i am suggestion in the future is have a news letter type of literature given to residents, instead of the fancy expensive postcard. Beside english have it in the 3 or 4 top languages, instead of asking them to go to their computer.. Remembering if this is a community participation then you must be more inclusive. I will also email our 3 elected officials to remind them about the same thing. I must say in all fairness that Ana of all the 3 elected officals, they have been doing a good jobin getting the message out in top 3 languages of ward 18.

Lastly, I must say as I see you are trying to make this a better community, community been the main word. I must remind the organizers that they need to make sure that they reach out to as many of the resident of this community as possible, unfortunately these are the challenges when you have a diverse community. • Dog Walker Needed   6 years 10 weeks ago

We have a wonderful walker who comes by our place on Wallace every day at lunch. My dog is walked either alone or with one other dog, but I know you can request solo if that's a necessity. Stephanie is a wonderful walker and we noticed a world of change in our dog's behaviour on walks after only a short time with her.

The Toronto Public Library Board met on Monday evening. Item 16 on the agenda was a Staff Report about the Perth/Dupont branch. It is interesting reading and puts our library on the Board's radar. http://www.torontopubliclibrary.ca/content/about-the-library/pdfs/board/...

  • Train noise   6 years 11 weeks ago

Excellent thanks for the info. Hopefully everyone who's having problems with this has/will bring it up to them. While I absolutely understand the need to protect the workers. There's also a need for consideration of the people that live near railways. These things don't have to necessarily be mutually exclusive!

  • Train noise   6 years 11 weeks ago

We live next to the CN line and the former storage building We have noticed an increase in horn blowing as well especially during and since the fire. I believe this is done to protect the people and vehicles now in and around the CN line. We can only hear the horns on the CN line and not the GO ones Hopefully in a few more days when the building is down and the equipment is gone the horn blowing will go back to its usual levels.

  • Perth Dupont Library: Original Location !   6 years 11 weeks ago

You'd have to ask Carmen Martino who's still at Perth Dupont. I remember going there and having long conversations with Rick Ficek as well as Carmen back then.

  • Nonna's Place and C-Store   6 years 11 weeks ago

    Are you insane?
Nonna's place ROCKS!!! Just because you don't like the sausages(I hate ALL sausages), that doesn't mean that the food isn't totally amazing. Nonna's Place serves the most amazing veal and chicken sandwiches...Nonna's Place puts California Sandwiches to shame.

Anyone know to whom and how one would complain about this? There must be quite a few people noticing this and having sleep disrupted daily!

  • Campbell and Wallace-Emerson Rink open today (Sat Dec 3)   6 years 11 weeks ago

Wallace-Emerson rink officially opens at 9am. That's when the changeroom is unlocked and skate rentals start. However, if you are willing to change outside, you can skate before then because the pleasure skating pad has no gates.

  • Campbell and Wallace-Emerson Rink open today (Sat Dec 3)   6 years 11 weeks ago

    what time do they open??

  • Train noise   6 years 11 weeks ago

Thought I was the only one hearing this..I always cringe when this happens daily as I have a little baby who is sleeping and has had issues with waking up during the night- horrible!!
    This has got to stop!

  • Campbell rink pre-lockout dinner and information session   6 years 11 weeks ago

Earlier this week I posted a notice about a community dinner and discussion in the Campbell Rink clubhouse 5:30-7pm this Saturday. One of the things up for discussion is the possibility of keeping Campbell and the other two Ward 18 outdoor rinks open during a lockout. For this to happen our city councilor would have to persuade management to keep the compressors running. Then if the city only locks out workers belonging to CUPE Local 416 (i.e. the zamboni drivers; the other rinks staff belong to Local 79) the rinks could stay open. Union workers have said they'd volunteer to come and help shovel the snow off the rinks -- a lockout is different than a strike! Councilor Ana Bailao said she would be passing by Campbell at 5:30. She's also said she's interested in hearing what the community has to say.

One more thing: a few of us are working on a short history of Campbell Park. Enjoy a cheap tasty meal and bring your recollections of the earlier days, if you used the park in years past. See you on Saturday.

  • Dodge Plant Fire   6 years 11 weeks ago

Heh. I hadn't noticed those guys when I had a brief look at this photo earlier. There's a third guy at the far end of the car near the "door".

The car isn't likely moving anywhere as it's not attached to any other car or locomotive. That's kind of an odd place to park it though, blocking four other sets of tracks. Maybe they were doing work at this time.

Interesting, when you look at this image and zoom onto the train, there are a couple of guys who look like they are just "hanging" out in the boxcar.

You may need to be logged in to the Library's website to see some of this.

(Aside: With a few quick searches, I've found some real gems on the Library's site, though few photos are of a good resolution...but can be purchased)

  • Junction Triangle Boys' & Girls' Club controversy   6 years 12 weeks ago

The Junction Triangle Boys and Girls Club is holding an open house tonight at their new location on Bloor Street. While the Club is sure to tout how great this is for the neighbourhood, the truth is something less rosy.
Operated by the Dovercourt Boys and Girls Club, this organization has badly managed their affairs and setback social services and programs for children in our neighbourhood by at least a decade.
When the lease ran out on their original location on Randolph, the Club had no where to go and moved into temporary facilities. A new location was found a year later on Ernest Avenue, but after a year of renovations and tens of thousands of dollars, the Club abandoned the facility without ever opening the doors. The total loss is close to $300,000.
The exit from Ernest was based on a number of falsehoods that the Club has never explained or apologized for. While telling the neighbourhood they couldn't afford the location, the Club spent close to two million dollars building a second floor on their Westmoreland clubhouse that already had a gym, swimming pool, computer lab, games room and a library.
As a result of the gross mismanagement of the Junction Triangle situation, the City of Toronto placed conditions on the Club when they were granted the use of the below-market-rent location on Bloor Street that now serves as their new clubhouse. None of those conditions have been met - hire a new Executive Director by September 1, include more JT residents on their board, develop a plan to build a new clubhouse that meets or exceeds their original location and start communicating with the neighbourhood at large.
The organization continues to think that the neighbourhood should support their efforts without any accountability. So now the City is investigating again what measures should be taken to ensure the Dovercourt Boys and Girls Club meets their obligations. It is a sad state of affairs and not a day to celebrate a location that is one-third the size of its original location and a fraction of the size of the Westmoreland clubhouse that is so clearly their priority.

  • Cafe Neon Opening Celebration   6 years 12 weeks ago

I have only been into Cafe Neon twice: on the first day it opened it offered free coffee to customers. Went in, wished the owner well. She seemed nice.
Went in another time and did get a bit of attitude from the woman working there. (Curly hair.) Nothing as bad as the previous poster, but just a little disappointing. Hate to admit this because I am very happy to see this kind of new venture in the neighborhood. Was just hoping the people working there were a little friendlier.
