  • Campbell Rink opens on Saturday   8 years 11 weeks ago

Shared use works when there aren't many people. Sundays used to be shared use until 4pm. However, there were too many hockey players in the afternoon for comfortable pleasure skating. Since Sunday afternoons were hockey in practice we changed the schedule to reflect that, but we left two hours of shared use in the morning when it isn't busy. We do get some skaters on Sunday mornings.

There is no pleasure skating on Sundays at Campbell, but there are two hours of shared use in the morning. There is, however, pleasure skating at Wallace-Emerson which is a ten-minute walk from Campbell. There is also Sunday pleasure skating at Dufferin Grove where both pads are given over to skaters.

  • Perth/Sterling & Tower Automotive: Jan 2010 Meeting Notes   8 years 11 weeks ago

Just to be clear on a few points:
At no time was the amount of 15,000 ever mentioned, 3000 jobs and 1500 residents in that order was what was said.
Castlepoint has a good reputation and I believe they want to build what they presented, this was the very 1st of a series of meetings and this was just for the community,(not required by anyone but requested by John O'Keefe and Alfredo Romano) Those most affected by whatever happens here will be the residents of South Perth and Sterling Rd.
As great as it is to have suggestions from other residents in the area bounded in the fuzzy boundary area, the South Perth and Sterling Rd residents are determined to help Castlepoint get their vision through.

I am a bit dubious about the shared use concept but wow was there ever a lot of activity on Saturday during pleasure skate. If that keeps up Sunday pleasure skate may have to be added. : )

Sunday has a "Shared Use" time from 10am to noon.

    http://www.cityrinks.ca/wiki/wiki.php?n=CampbellRink.CampbellRinkSchedul...

    Sunday

    • 10:00am – noon Shared Use (supervised)
    • noon – 6:00pm All Ages Hockey

The ice rink is open and unsupervised at times.
``Shared Use`` - All ages shinny players share the ice with pleasure skaters. No slapshots. If numbers warrant, staff may at their discretion divide the ice into separate pleasure-skating and hockey sides.

I'm guessing that in practice this means that it's mainly shinny players using the ice.

Just wanting someone to confirm, is Campbell rink closed to pleasure skating on Sundays?

  • 2010 Municipal Election   8 years 12 weeks ago

According to Torontoist, Adam Giambrone will announce he's running for mayor on February 1st. The invitation doesn't specifically say he's running for mayor, but that's where all the recent speculation seems to point to.

"pornography photographers " what does this mean ? This seems far fetched to me.

  • Junction Triangle Lofts @ 229 Wallace   8 years 12 weeks ago

We moved here several years ago when D&M was still there and the city was discussing the police station in the empty lot on Lansdowne...I am so happy to see that something is being done (FINALLY) in this neighbourhood to improve it.
I am tired of the prostitutes and drug dealers and pornography photographers in our back alley and next to the area that is being developed and I hope this makes a change - soon!!!

As for needing more affordable housing in the city, I am just pleased someone is developing the land and improving the area and would welcome with OPEN arms anyone who wishes to further develop this last area of the downtown core that is still needing a significant amount of improvement.

  • Perth/Sterling & Tower Automotive: Jan 2010 Meeting Notes   8 years 12 weeks ago

The numbers I remember are this:

    • 3000 employment opportunities
    • 1,500 extra residents

15 000 seems too much for our little piece of land around here.

I'm in wait and see mode, though hopeful about their plans. I just hope our area doesn't become overly busy.

  • Perth/Sterling & Tower Automotive: Jan 2010 Meeting Notes   8 years 12 weeks ago

    They also mentioned:
    - approx. 15,000 more people in the development - this would include employed workers in the commercial buildings + condo(s) + townhomes. This seemed more like wishful thinking then actual wisdom.
    - They mentioned a big software developer was interested now, but the only reason they didn't come to the meeting was because they didn't have actual building to show them.
    - Also in 2007 they were approached by a german company who had business plan in place to make the Tower building a classic car museum. The business model plan worked on the basis that people with classic cars can bring them in and restore them and also store them at the building to be displayed to the general public. He said company had ideas such as bring the cars via elevator to the showroom floors. Also, they were going to build a bar/restaurant beside it. Developer at the time were concentrating on attracting Pinewood, so they had no interest in the companies idea.

Im sure there was more as I was late for the meeting, but caught some this info.

  • Perth/Sterling & Tower Automotive: Jan 2010 Meeting Notes   8 years 12 weeks ago

Naomi was at this meeting and came away feeling that this was all far too preliminary to really have any opinion. Until you actually see drawings and a site proposal (ie when money is being spent) nothing should be assumed.

    She had these comments:

--that there no real mention of how the development (whatever it is) will effect resources like schools in the area.

--Most of the plans about retail and jobs were so vague as to be imaginary. The marketplace will dictate what the design is down the road and we are not there yet. Job estimates seem very high.

--comments about traffic at Bloor seemed unrealistic

--knowledge of Railpath seemed vague and out of sync with progressive design. There is an obvious opportunity to tie in additional green space with railpath.

--little clear direction on "Section 37 money" ie what might we get from the developer in return. There was talk of a bridge over rail but that was then pawned off as a City expense and anybody who builds bridges over that kind of distance needs lots of money. This an expense the developer could contribute too.

--seemed very vague about mitigation of soil contamination. Remediation apparently will not cover all the site so what the physical implications of mitigation?

Remember these people used "Pinewood Studios" as a barging chip with Filmport a year ago and got everybody excited about a studio that was never going to be built so like all developers, keep the eyeballs glued and the pressure on.

  • Perth/Sterling & Tower Automotive: Jan 2010 Meeting Notes   8 years 12 weeks ago

I was at the meeting. It was very informative compared to the one we had in the summer. They had maps (aerial views) of what they are proposing to do - ie mixed residential with commercial. I like how they are planning to do bit of both ie condo's + townhomes.

Glad the smoke stack is staying (its great reference point for giving directions - lol). I also welcomed the news of access to the pathway south of Bloor. The green space is desperately needed south of Bloor - closest parks now are Souroren Park and Perth (both require to cross major streets to access).

Im finally glad there is something happening south of Bloor. Main reason I decided move south of Bloor on Perth was in hope that in the future the industrial area would be redeveloped - its been a long time coming im just glad its happened in my life time (fingers crossed).

  • Fuzzy Boundaries Announces Updated Voting Process   8 years 12 weeks ago

Good point, Kevin. Let's keep followups on this topic in one place. I'm closing comments on this item here, but you can continue to read/post feedback on the Fuzzy Boundaries site.

  • Fuzzy Boundaries Announces Updated Voting Process   8 years 12 weeks ago

The discussion is going to get splintered if people copy and paste questions/comments from the Fuzzy Boundaries site on to the South Junction site too. The South Junction site should be left for all the other community discussion since Fuzzy Boundaries has a stand-alone site. There is no point in crowding other legitimate discussion here. There is a prominent link on the main page of this site to the Fuzzy Boundaries site and you will find a reply to your questions Jack in the Fuzzy Boundaries forum at http://www.fuzzyboundaries.ca/node/8#comment-441

  • Fuzzy Boundaries Announces Updated Voting Process   8 years 12 weeks ago

I had some reservations about Fuzzy's previous naming/voting process but having just read the new guidelines I am quite comfortable with the revisions. I think the process is now as fair and democratic as possible. I would like to thank the Fuzzy members (all volunteers!) for their hard work and due diligence. I'm looking forward to seeing the short list at the end of the month.

Excellent meeting, and interesting plans presented. I'm hoping to do a writeup and post my notes here soon, when I can find the time.

    How did the meeting go?

I wasn't able to make it! (dentist appointment)

  • Fuzzy Boundaries Announces Updated Voting Process   8 years 12 weeks ago

Regarding the updated voting process. It was great to hear that the panel idea was scraped and that the residents will finally get to chose their own community name.

What I am not clear on is:

    1) Will there be a door-to-door canvass to inform the residents about the naming of the community.

    2) Why is the voting been done in two stages?

Lastly, why are we asking the residents to choose from a list of names?

This I believe this will influence the residents vote. I don't find this to be a free vote, when they have to choose from a list of names. Jack

Just use Google translation online. Its easy and fast and pretty much 100% perfect. I have used it and had Portuguese neighbors review and they found no problems. It takes a second to translate into pretty much every language there is.

  • Fuzzy Boundaries meeting (Jan. 14)   8 years 12 weeks ago

To who ever wrote this, I wish people would start to use their real name. I will be availble to help with door knocking, if it gets to that point. But I want to hear what happened in the meeting with the new details on the voting process. As far as the translation goes, was donated to us by foodshare. But you might want to ask Adam's office??? I don't mind knocking on doors and doing my bit, if it gets to that point. But will wait to hear the details first??

  • Fuzzy Boundaries meeting (Jan. 14)   8 years 12 weeks ago

So Jack are you volunteering to get the information translated into the top four languages in the area?

  • Fuzzy Boundaries meeting (Jan. 14)   8 years 12 weeks ago

Though the fuzzy boundaries cards went out to homes in the hood, not all received them or a small % un able to read them. We need to break up into teams and pick a street or two, and go door to door. The info about the voting needs to be available in the top four languages spoken in this community. Once you made contact you give each person, family or couple, lets say 16 yrs and over a card to take to when voting, like the system they use in regular election day. The name with the most votes wins. No we should not dictate the names or assume that people are stupid that they will pick a bad name, thing they are a bunch of hillbillies and unable to vote a proper name.
No computers, not everyone has one, especially seniors who are residents of this community. Jack

I walk my daughter to school past this site daily and am looking forward to seeing it cleaned up. Any space that gets cleaned up and limits the areas where drug dealers/ users and prostitiutes can hide is a step in the right direction.
