It shows the damage walls (and giant overpasses) can do. I support public transit but it has to be an open consultation process; something Metrolinx doesn't practice.
Don't worry about an overpass, tunnel or any construction in the long term. Metrolinx has promised that unicorns will safely glide people over the tracks, but until the unicorns are discovered, these temporary solutions will have to suffice.
George's manager was Irv Ungerman who owned Royce Dupont Chicken. Locals have told me that he worked for Irv at Dupont and Symington.
I have suggested before that a great name for our area would be Chuvalo. Serious. If you are going to name yourselves after something name it after something that even Ali couldn't knock down.
Remember earlier in the year when Metrolinx claimed they had never heard of the Barrie line? Thats who we are dealing with. This time our community will be ready. Stay tuned.
He also showed up at the meeting with some "information" that included his 8 month old letter from May 11. You think he could have tweaked it a bit. Not only is he a coward on the issue he is also LAZY. During the meeting he often asked residents to "send him info" and "get in touch with me" ... shouldn't he be doing that for us? He treated the constituents like they were his staff - then he has the gall to say "lets work together on this". A transparent strategy to shift responsibility from himself and onto others. Total crap.
As someone who has engaged in more than a few "cheap" PR stunts, I have to defend the practice. The real issue here is that Tony Ruprecht is invisible on the issue of the planned massive expansion of diesel train service along the Georgetown rail corridor.
He is trying to have it both ways. He claims to support electric trains, but would be satisfied if the airport link was made electric by 2015. How can he be a member of the provincial government while claiming to be against a major policy initiative? He can't. If he were truly against the expansion of diesel trains he would leave the government and sit as an independent (which he calls a silly idea). The man is only interested in the status of being an MPP and the fat cheque that comes with it.
Park recreation staff met on Thursday with some residents to discuss pleasure skating at the rink. We are considering a change to the schedule. When the details are final, we will let the community know. The change won't be dramatic but it won't necessarily be the last one either. We're taking baby steps, because we want to see what works.
Considering the video is posted by Liberals and has the comments diabled its pretty clear that this video is just a cheap stunt so Tony can say he "raised the issue". Pretty poor effort and an insult to residents.
Yes he showed up and stayed for about an hour or so. Lots of pointed questions, very few satisfactory answers. For those who were there, here is the link to Tony's "questions" to Gerretsen in the Legislature Dec. 3, 2009.
As far as I can tell Tony's efforts to stick up for the people of this riding are as follows:
- One letter written May 11, 2009.
- Sponsoring of two press conferences for the "Clean Air People" which entails making two phone calls.
All that in 8 months. From last nights meeting I have the distinct impression we are going to see more of the same. It was evident at the meeting that he barely has an elementary grasp of the issue. You think he could have done a bit of research over the past 8 months, or got someone on his staff to do it. But what should we expect for $115,000 a year (not including expenses and benefits)? What does he DO all day?
There is an hour of pleasure skating Saturday mornings 11am-12pm, but most Saturdays last year no skaters showed up.
At 4-6pm we're strict. We clear hockey players off the ice even if no pleasure skaters show up. At 11, however, we're more flexible. Staff will clear the ice if skaters are there; otherwise we let the hockey players stay, because we don't want the ice to sit empty.
In previous years there was pleasure skating from 2-4pm but turnout was low. That's why staff changed the schedule to 4-6pm.
For the April 22nd 2009 public meeting, why was so little notice given by GO / Metrolinx / the Provincial Government? For such a major infrastructure project in our neighbourhood, why was there only an ad The Villager just a few days before the meeting? Why no flyers or other communications? Why did we have to depend on our local councillors' offices (Giambrone's and Palacio's) to get the word out at the last minute?
Now that the Davenport Diamond project has been rolled into a much larger EA for the entire line's expansion, how will the affect the way this project progresses? What kinds of public consultations will we have?
Will the previous 3 options (Underpass, bridge/wall, combined existing with bridge/wall) still be on the table, or is the research starting from scratch?
I just wanted to mention that my daughter's school is putting in place a skate lending program where all the children in the school have access to free skates for the season. So far the gym teacher has noted the sizes of every child's shoes. Maybe it can be something that you may want to consider as well. As for the pleasure skate times for Saturdays, most families are having dinner at these times so it is really hard for families to come out at this time. Has an 11:00am time slot been considered for families of young children?
The Canadian Transportation Agency has issued its final decision about Go Transit/Metrolinx and their pile driving work on the West Toronto Diamond Grade Sepearation Project. You might have seen some of the details on the evening news tonight. Here is the link to the news release issued by the Transportation Agency that Go Transit/Metrolinx will have a difficult time putting a positive spin on. http://www.newswire.ca/en/releases/archive/December2009/07/c8698.html
Let's hope the measures help people affected by all the noise.
The new location will be closer than the Ghonnerea Mall and will have a better selection (of Scotch I hope). I do wonder though what will happen to traffic on Dundas at the turnin to the parking lot. Its already a bit of a jam there including walkers scurrying across. I have wondered for a long time why they don't have a set of lights (synchronized with Bloor). I missed the LCBO in the Crossways so hopefully when this site is redeveloped this store will stay.
Anyone coming into Boo's with their skates is entitled to a 10% discount on food. Also teams from the permit skates get a deal as well. Drop in after a cold skate for a cold pint!

Some news about our neighbourhood - now, what ARE we going to call it?
Truth is george chuvalo's first job WAS at Royce-Dupont Chicken when he about 15 I think.
If you get a chance to see this doc do.
As we celebrate the fall of the Berlin Wall this doc shows how more walls have actually gone up (by those who were against the Berlin Wall).

After talking to parents, Campbell staff have added two hours of pleasure skating to the rink schedule. The new hours are Monday 3:30-5:30pm.
The current pleasure skating hours are:
Saturday 11am-12pm
Saturday 4-6pm
Monday 3:30-5:30pm
Saturdays 4-6pm there is a campfire with hot chocolate and homemade treats.
Hi Kevin,
We will be advertising this in our parent council newsletter which should reach approximately 220 +.

Good to know, I will keep it in mind.

Did anyone go to this meeting? Did Ruprecht show up? Did he have anything interesting to say?
We have $2 skate rentals at Campbell.

I hope this doesn't mean that Mr. Ruprecht will bail before anyone has a chance to ask serious questions.
To me, the most important issue right now is the Davenport Diamond Grade Separation. A few things I want to know:

Great news, Kevin. Thanks for sharing.
