  • Campbell Rink opens on Saturday   8 years 19 weeks ago

I was one of the Campbell staff members who spoke with Carlaa and the other moms from the Perth School Council on Saturday.

Mondays 3:30-4:30pm are Shared Use. Recreation staff will divide the ice in two. Hockey players will stay on one side of the rink while pleasure skaters will stay on the other. A rink staffer will be on the ice to make sure the hockey players stay on their side. If the turnout for pleasure skating on Mondays is good, staff may make the hour pleasure-skating only. By dividing the ice in two we are experimenting to see if there is demand for Monday pleasure skating.

At the moment the best time for pleasure skating at Campbell is Saturday 4-6pm when pleasure skaters have the whole rink to themselves. Staff make a campfire and serve hot chocolate and food. Staff understand that this is a narrow time period and not convenient for everyone. Staff are open to more pleasure skating at Campbell but they need to know the demand is there, because there's no shortage of men and boys who want to play hockey.

    Hi everyone,

A few of us (3) went to the skating rink yesterday with our children.
It was a disappointment that the rink was not open and that no one else showed up to skate. (We didn't know it was canceled.)

In discussions with some of the Perth parents they felt that the skating hours are too limited and the majority believed this rink was only for hockey playing.
It's rather unfortunate because this location is a 5-10min walk from our homes and right in our community. The Perth School Council has agreed that we're going to advertise in our newsletter to make everyone aware that there is pleasure skating at this location.
We had a good discussion with the rink staff and concluded that if there is a need, the schedule for pleasure skating will be revisited.

Join us tomorrow (Monday) if the rink is open, we'll be taking our kids to skate from 3:30-4:30pm. The staff has been kind enough to extend the pleasure skating by half hour so come out with your kids.

Apparently it is more than a rumour, it appears there will be a new LCBO store next to Zellers in the Spring. Thanks to Scott D. for the blogTO story: http://www.blogto.com/eat_drink/2009/08/lcbo_coming_to_roncesvalles_area/

Saturday was a frustrating day at Campbell. The rink was supposed to open at 10. When the building attendant got there at 9:30, he walked around the ice. It was pretty good in the middle but very thin along the boards. At some spots along the boards it was concrete. Guys arrived to play hockey. At 12:30pm the Zamboni came and did a flooding. The Zamboni driver told the building attendant to take the nets off the ice and to close the rink. The recreation supervisor told the building attendant to go home. However, the rink gate has no lock so people continued to play hockey even though the rink was closed and unsupervised. I don't know if the rink will be open on Sunday. According to City Rinks (an unofficial website run by CELOS) there problems at many rinks today.

Please note All Ages on the schedule means all ages hockey. Last year a few people thought it meant all ages skating. There will be a campfire from 4-6pm. Pleasure skating at the moment is limited. Park staff are open to having more pleasure-skating hours, but last year the turnout was low. The schedule can be changed if the turnout is higher this year.

I have dealt with Solways in the past, protesting in front of their place years ago, even the drivers who were taken their metal to Solways got aggressive towards me, been treatening, they didn't scare me. The drivers tell me that Solways are untouchable, because of the money they have???
I meet a staff member of solways some two weeks back in the park, who said lives in the neighbourhood and he has pretty much the same attitude as everyone else at Solways. He told me that Adam or the City can't do anything to Solways.
So I don't think Solways really cares about there trucks backing out into the pathway, thinking that they might endanger someone lives.

  • Neighbourhood Happenings   8 years 19 weeks ago

Scott, I seen the tire marks myself they were made by the trucks from solways, they were the same size tire that the trucks had. The tire marks were a straight line, went halfway onto the path, they are doing this to back up. I should of taken pictures with my cell phone. I was on my way to an appointment, I was in a rush, but I did see couple of other people looking at the same thing. What I can gather is the trucks track the mud from the open lot next to the new boys and girls club and muddy up the road going in and out from solways.

  • DIGIN Meeting - Tony Ruprecht   8 years 19 weeks ago

An excellent opportunity to talk to our MIA MPP about why he didnt have the guts to show up at the Human Train March and support clean air for our community.

    HST

I'd love to hear his thoughts on HST:

    Does he personally oppose it?
Has he expressed any concern over it with his party?
and what are his fears regarding voter backlash when HST is in place?

I won't beat around bush here. I'm thinking our ward/riding will be effected in some way or another (census eludes to the social demographics). I wonder how popular the ruling party will be come July 1st, 2010.

    Thanks,
    Ranajit

Are you saying that trucks waiting for Solways were driving on the railpath? Did you actually see that?

There are some City and Railpath contractor trucks that are still using the path to finish off a few things.

Peter Leiss at Parks told me today that they will be putting rocks in place to block access at all streets. In terms of Solways they are not 100% sure as Solways has moved rocks in the past with their Bobcat. Parks may put up some kind of unmovable structure.

Peter also met with Go Transit about the recent issues with Go Staff driving on the Railpath (and being not very accountable about it). The word came down from above and GO is totally on board about not using Railpath. At Randolf there will be foldable bollards and Go and Parks will share the key with Go only being allowed to cross directly to their land. As much as most of us disagree with Metrolinx/GO about diesel in fairness I must tip my hat to Metrolinx head Robert Pritchard for getting this dealt with fast and offering to pay to repair any damage that had been done by GO.

In the future Parks trucks will drive on Railpath for maintenance reasons but they are trained to drive in parks.

  • Neighbourhood Happenings   8 years 19 weeks ago

For the organizers of the New Railpath. I have a concern you should beware of. When I was walking on Ernest Avenue at around 12:30PM heading to the new Railpath, I noticed that there were truck marks made from the mud that went right onto the path. This is a safety concern. The drivers must of known that they were on the path, because they need to go up a small step to get on the path. When I got there, there were 2 big trucks at the entrance of the path, waiting to get loaded with metal. Both the Toronto Police traffic unit and Adams office were called.

Now that parent teacher interviews are around the corner here are a few questions to keep in mind when attending your interview.
    1. What skills does my child need to work on?
    2. What activities can we do at home to strengthen those skills?
    3. Does my child complete his/her homework on time?
    4. Are there any concerns about class work that I should know about?
    5. What are my child's strengths?
    6. How can I help enrich those strengths?

Keep an open mind and be honest. If you have concerns that the teacher is not aware of here is your chance to voice them. Being open about the teacher's concerns can help your child now before they fall behind or the concern becomes a serious problem.

  • People in Your Neighbourhood   8 years 19 weeks ago

    Hi Everyone,

To Jack, Virginia, Kevin and anyone else that is the current topic of discussion, "thank you for attempting to make this piece of the pie, a better place to live in."
I may not agree with the renaming of community or the obstruction of green space and I have opinions on how things should be done but I think that people need to take a minute and recognize that "there is someone out there that cares to make a difference."
What are you doing to today to contribute to society?

Those who attempt to lead in any community face a lot of resistance and scrutiny.
I've learned the meaning of that on a whole new level in the last couple of years with the organization of the Perth Festival and being the chair of Perth P.S.
"There is always someone to criticize/scrutinize/complain but rarely are they the ones that are willing to come out and do the work."

Yesterday I gathered my team at work together and we decided that we were going to buy a rooster/2 chickens and some fresh water for a family in need.
It sounds funny but there are many needy and worthwhile causes out there that need help. Make a positive difference today.

It is really unfortunate that so many people rise to the bait and get into a slinging match when someone calls them a name or makes some ridiculous accusation. Every kid knows the line about sticks and stones... A few adults here would do well to remember that and let things go.
I have been accused of all kinds of things and been called many names since the Fuzzy Boundaries project started last year. Eventually I figured out that it is not worth trying to change anyone's mind or defend myself against name calling/stupid allegations. Those people making the claims will never be persuaded otherwise and that's why they lash out in such an inflammatory manner.
We can disagree. We can disagree strongly, but all the back and forth slinging just looks bad on everyone and turns off a lot of people in the neighbourhood.
Next time someone calls you a name remember that you have friends and family who know better and just let it go.

Most residents do not see this area as the "The Junction". We view "The Junction" as the area north of us across the tracks.

I can see it being favorable for RE agents, naming this area after the Junction, but we wont get into that discussion, at least not today.

The Fuzzy Boundaries website mentioned above, will have more info on this and the blog should bring you up to date.

I thought that the Toronto neighbourhood map was a really good stab for a first or second try at it. Why can't it just be part of The Junction?

How often do we hear these words from you and yet when one reads back on past postings, we can clearly document all your hypocrisies. Either way, you and your posse will never see it because you all clearly believe you are always so very right with every opinion you make.

Save the new rebuttal and just copy and paste what you just wrote above. '

CAUTION TO OTHERS: Let us please stop feeding the trolls. It seems they get off on any kind of attention. Both positive and negative. Any attention seems to give them more feedback to never shut the hell up.

Even this posting will have have all of them screaming INJUSTICE to their sensitive souls while screaming back at all of us who just don't understand them and how they only have the best interest of the community at heart.
