  • Cafe Neon Opening Soon!   6 years 26 weeks ago

We ran an event here for about 50-odd people after hours. Niki and Katie were awesome and took excellent care of us, even taking the time to mingle with some of the group.

In fact. We loved it so much, we've chosen to host the Hackernest Tech Social there on the last Monday of every month.

(just FYI, the Hackernest is at 231 Wallace Avenue, same building; it's a shared office/coworking joint for startups/entrepreneurs/freelancers etc., etc.)

    Much love,
    Shaharris & Co.

  • Perth Ave PS schoolyard development   6 years 26 weeks ago

I'm not the organizer of this meeting - just helping out with posting info on this page. As I understand it, the discussion will be around how to make the yard more attractive and to include more sports and/or activity equipment for the kids. All this in the constraint that there is an old school foundation under the yard so the asphalt can't be turned into grass.

I believe ideas being sought include what you'd like to see in the school yard, and also how to fund raise for the initiative. I will ask for more info and post again if there is anything else relevant.

I too agree about the Giraffe development, I hope they can find a way to make it happen then we can insist the project is the new benchmark of thinking about sustainablity in urban developments in our area, nice turn around from the areas industrial polluting years.

Your points are well taken. There are people who will buy condo's without parking if it is on the TTC subway line. We have not seen anything yet design wise but that corner is exactly where people should be putting taller buildings. There are always issues with traffic and access anywhere in a city but that doesnt mean we should not pursue density on top of transit. With the GO Mobility hub and the inevitable development of the Zellers area and Bloor at Sterling/Perth there will no doubt be many other projects in the area. Its too bad the Giraffe got stopped as its great design and forward thinking would have set a standard for others to copy.

  • Metrolinx Air Station on Railpath   6 years 26 weeks ago

Manuel Pedrosa, Manager, Community Relations, Georgetown Project Metrolinx asked that these comments be posted in reply to your questions. His contact info is also in this thread and its his job to talk to us so give him a call if you want more detail.

"Once the Ministry of the Environment (MOE) completes its review of the data collected from our air monitoring stations and validates the results, the data will be published at gotransit.com/gts. We have submitted two quarterly reports to the MOE for the Weston air monitoring station. We are waiting for acceptance of these reports prior to posting.

Metrolinx engaged an advisory group made up of representatives from various stakeholders and technical specialists to review possible locations for the air quality monitoring stations. The MOE validated the locations for the three stations. One of the key acceptance criteria was to have unobstructed exposure on all sides of the air quality monitoring station. At the Bloor station, the MOE concluded that it was not an ideal site because of the buildings in the area which would impede data collection by the monitoring station."

    thx in advance

  • 2376 Dundas St. West (North of Crossways): Tower Development   6 years 26 weeks ago

this is precisely the place for development of a 30 story tower(s)

not only does another two 30flr towers already exist on intersection but to use the land properly and build transit supported development (TTC right at door), it is the ideal place to build properly, a tiny 15-20 story would look odd there right beside two 30 story buildings, we need proper planning in the city, and to improve the environment / air quality.

The urban sprawl is what is killing us, not proper density, we keep wanting only 2-4 story buildings so everything looks the way it did 50yrs ago, thats what has got us into this problem of car dependency and horrific traffic congestion.
It is time to progress, our tax dollars fund TTC & GO, which are both at the door of this development, we need to embrace the future and remember, this area is still considered Downtown TO, this is not the suburbs, we are still very fortunate considering.
If you can't build 30 stories with Subway/GO/Streetcar/Buses/BikePath at your front door in the city of TO, where can you build it...??? in an area where you need a car or must take a bus to rapid transit (meaning more air pollution), then hope they will extend the subway to the area at additional tax payers expense, we already have spent to build Dundas W and now must maximize our investment

What we need to do is voice concern for the amount of parking spaces they offer, pushing all the new/coming developers in the area to sell units to transit users not car users, and build with new Green building standards, then we change what we expect from new developments, the environment & the area local businesses.

In the city core few people buy condos with car parking 'cause you don't need to, you have rapid transit and walk to patronize local businesses, we need to instill that same mentality in our area, it is not just about how many stories a building has but how building right for planned growth can change the way people live in an area and how our local environment improves for all of us

I am looking forward to the meeting to hear what they have planned, hoping they build for local community & avid transit users

I met to say would not like another huge 29 story building at the propsed site. Missed the word not in my previous comment.

  • 2376 Dundas St. West (North of Crossways): Tower Development   6 years 27 weeks ago

I definitely would like another huge 29 story building at the proposed site.
I live at the crossways building A and would be directly across from us obstructing our view of the city which is pretty amazing right now. It would also create more traffic and crowding and congestion, to an already busy area.

  • Jonah Schein wins Davenport Seat   6 years 27 weeks ago

A man is holding this dog on a leash made from his belt - it was wandering around at the railpath and Rusking at the Electrical building. Friendly, light brown, medium build, short hair with a green faded collar that didn't have a name that I could see, but it said Alberta Vertrenary services, TOronto Ont. If you know this dog or it is yours, go there - a rather weathered but friendly old guy is holding him until the SPCA can get there. Good luck.

  • Jonah Schein wins Davenport Seat   6 years 27 weeks ago

It was an exciting race to watch... I think Jonah will represent our neighbourhood in the best way possible.

He was on Metro Morning around 7:20am this morning sounding pretty tired. Glad to see this riding getting some much deserved attention for ousting the Liberals. Both Andrew Cash and Jonah Schein campaigned hard and earned their respective seats.

  • Jonah Schein wins Davenport Seat   6 years 27 weeks ago

Couldn't help but notice all the attention on Davenport tonight because it was such a tight race up until the end. A real nail bighter. Losing the riding lost the Liberals a majority.

  • Provincial Election: Davenport Candidates Debate (Rogers TV)   6 years 27 weeks ago

Christina immediately lost my vote (confidence) when she backed diesel trains,

Has she NOT been paying attention to what the area residence have been saying?

If she can ignore our concerns now, while still campaigning, what can we expect if elected ????

I'm voting for who supports electric trains & good transit

  • 2011 Ontario Provincial Election   6 years 27 weeks ago

I think Christina Martins has been behind the eight-ball from the start. Ruprecht's last minute decision to bow out didn't leave her much time to organize. (Ruprecht clearly pulled out because he saw the writing on the wall. He would have for sure lost had he run. Also party brass were no doubt giving him a nudge. I don't buy explanation that fellow MPP Bruce Crozier's death made him realize there was more to life.)
I understand he hasn't been much of a help to Martins. In fact, his supporters are helping Jagg.

  • Provincial Election: Davenport Candidates Debate (Rogers TV)   6 years 27 weeks ago

During the debate a caller asked the candidates if they lived in Davenport and if not, what riding did they live in. Christina Martins did not answer the question. She only said she lived in the GTA.

  • 2011 Ontario Provincial Election   6 years 28 weeks ago

Voting starts less than 24 hours from now.

Anyone have any final comments to help sway our votes? :) I never vote in advanced polls and consider myself undecided right until the end. I would hate to vote early and then find out that my vote went to the wrong person (though sometimes this happens even when I wait!)

Anyone want to throw out any predictions? Here's my guess, though it doesn't necessarily reflect what I want:

    Davenport:
    Jonah Schein (NDP): 47%
    Cristina Martins (LIB): 35%
    Kirk Russell (PC): 9%
    Frank de Jong (GRN): 8%
    Other: 1%

    Ontario:
I'm not going to guess actual seats here. The polling this time around has been pretty incredible, with pretty huge numbers of people polled recently. This suggests accuracy, but I'm not sure if that can be trusted still. I mean, look at what happened with our municipal election, where polls didn't predict Rob Ford's strength.
So, my guess is: Liberal minority

  • Metrolinx Air Station on Railpath   6 years 28 weeks ago

About a year ago, I became quite interested in the question of whether it would be possible to have a set of air quality monitoring stations placed at locations along the tracks. I was even considering building how to build a proof-of-concept, on my own. One other detail that was important, is that the collected data be shared openly, using a service like Pachube (https://pachube.com/).

Needless to say, when I first saw the station that was constructed along the Railpath, between Ruskin and Wallace, I was quite excited. What I'm curious about now, though, is whether the collected data is available online.

The detail in the post above, about mitigation, got my hackles up, however. I don't like the idea of erecting walls, along the tracks, at all. Whether or not this would be used as a strategy for controlling noise, or other effects (air pollution?) matters not to me. In fact, the mere suggestion that such an action could ever be necessary, seems to add credence to the argument that the new trains should not be powered by diesel locomotives, at all; as they would contribute to both additional noise and air pollution along the length of the corridor.

A few weeks back, I was looking at the new monitoring station when a passerby, from the neighbourhood, struck up a conversation about it. She called into question, the choice of location for the station. In particular, that she felt it should have perhaps been located closer to the Bloor Street GO Station, as that is where the locomotives are starting and stopping. It's at that point, when a larger exhaust of diesel smoke is produced. To be honest, I have no idea whether this would introduce a bias to the collected data, or whether this would result in a more accurate account of the environmental effects of the rail traffic. But it did get me thinking.

I came across this bit of information, from Metrolinx, regarding the location of all three monitoring stations...

    http://www.gotransit.com/gts/en/monitoring/aamrp.aspx

... and there's a map here (from 2009), which shows the proposed locations for each...

    http://www.gotransit.com/gts/en/docs/Key_Map.pdf

At the moment, I'm still searching for more details on whether there is a place where the measurements are, or will be, made available online. This section of the Ontario Ministry of the Environment site, may be a place to watch for it though...

If anyone here is aware of additional detail about this, please share it.

  • Junction Triangle Boys' & Girls' Club controversy   6 years 28 weeks ago

September brought some welcome (and much needed) change to the Dovercourt Boys and Girls Club. Board Chairperson Vivian Payne has been replaced. Operations Manager Justin Hanna is no longer with the Club.
In mid-October, a new Executive Director will become the senior manager at Dovercourt. According to the hype, Danny Anckle brings more than 20 years experience and a great deal of energy to the job. Let's hope his efforts are successful in turning the Club around in the Junction Triangle.
The previous administration badly bungled the new clubhouse location on Ernest Avenue resulting in the loss of more than $300,000. They shrunk the Junction Triangle Clubhouse from 7000 sq. feet to something close to 2800 sq. feet. It is disheartening to hear them tout the new location as a great success.
The hiring of a new Executive Director is one of four conditions the City of Toronto has imposed on the Dovercourt Boys and and Girls Club as a direct result of the Ernest Avenue Clubhouse fiasco. The other conditions have not yet been met; the Club has failed to recruit additional representatives from our neighbourhood on the Board of Directors, they have had no communication with our neighbourhood and eventually will have to deal with finding a new, more suitable location for their operations here.
At this point, I just want to say thank you to everyone who signed on to the letter to the Ombudsman and voiced their concerns about the Club. It helped a lot! The Dovercourt Boys and Girls Club is not out of the woods yet, but the prospect of new management provides a glimmer of hope for the future.
