Notes and Followup from the Ward 18 All Candidates Meeting

Here are my notes from the May 19 2009 Ward 18 All Candidates Meeting, held at Casa da Madeira on Dupont St. in the Junction Triangle. These notes are just an attempt to capture what the candidates said, and how they responded to questions. I'm keeping personal opinion out of it for now, although I might follow up with some of that in the comments. Apologies if it's long-winded, but I tried to scribble down as much as I could. I obviously missed many things that were said too.

Thankfully, the professional reporters were there too. For a much better writeup of this meeting, check out the article in The Villager: Ward 18 candidates introduce their campaigns. Local blog The Bloordale Press also has a writeup, including some video from the candidates' opening remarks.

I'd love to hear other peoples' opinions and reactions to this meeting. And of course, if I made any mistakes in these notes, please feel free to correct me. I also encourage the candidates to post any followup comments here too.

All eight registered Ward 18 candidates were present: Ana Bailão, Kevin Beaulieu, Frank de Jong, Nha le, Kirk Russell, Jack Triolo, Hema Vyas, and Ken Wood.

DIGIN Meeting: Kevin Beaulieu

Apologies for the late posting of this meeting information. The meeting is TONIGHT.

The next DIGIN meeting takes place on Tuesday May 11th 2010, 7:00PM in the Ambrico Room of the Wallace-Emerson Community Centre, 1260 Dufferin St. (at Dupont).

DIGIN meetings are a great place to meet other residents and find out more about what is happening in the general Bloor-Lansdowne area. There are often representatives from Councillor Giambrone's office to provide updates about local issues and other news.

Public Forum: Diesel vs. Electric Rail Expansion

Please take note of this upcoming meeting at City Hall regarding the expansion of diesel train traffic in the Georgetown rail corridor on the western side of our neighbourhood.

Public Forum

All Aboard? Diesel, electric and clean air: Which way forward?

This forum is an opportunity for public discussion of the proposed Metrolinx expansion of the Georgetown South transit line and the rail link from Union Station to Pearson.

The Board of Health supports expanded public transit as a way to reduce vehicle traffic, but remains concerned about health risks and air quality impacts predicted with the proposed diesel rail expansion.

Forum Date: Monday, March 22, 2010
Time: 6:30 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.
Place: Council Chambers, Toronto City Hall, 100 Queen Street W.
Public Transit: Subway to either Queen (Yonge line) or Osgoode (University line) and walk over to Bay St. Alternatively, take the Bay bus #6 or #6A northbound from Union Station or southbound from the Bay subway station (transfer required). Disembark at Albert Street.

There will be a panel discussion, followed by a question period. Everyone is welcome to attend. Registration is not required.

Meeting: Sterling Studio Lofts demolition + towers?

Lisa posted this meeting notice on the Sterling Studio Lofts discussion forum:

Hi!
I live in the town homes on Merchant Lane and just received something in my mailbox last night. It was a flyer that read as follows:

"Proposal to demolish the sterling lofts and build two, twenty story structures on the site!
If you wish to oppose these plans please attend the meeting at:
The Ukrainian Cultural Centre
1604 Bloor Street West
Date: February 17th, 2010
Time: 7:00pm"

Seems like awfully short notice for this meeting. Anyone else get this flyer? Going to the meeting?

You can discuss this meeting and development proposal on the Sterling Studio Lofts discussion forum.

UPDATE (12:30pm):

I asked Councillor Giambrone's office about this meeting, and was sent the original meeting notice that was distributed to the residents of 221-227 Sterling Rd. Staff also explained some of the background behind this meeting. Read on below.

Perth/Sterling & Tower Automotive: Jan 2010 Meeting Notes

Castlepoint's PropertiesCastlepoint's Properties

Here are my notes from the January 18 2010 meeting about the ongoing developments at the former Tower Automotive properties. Hosted by Castlepoint Realty Partners (the property owners / developers) and the South Perth and Sterling Rd. Residents Association at the Church of the First Born, the meeting was certainly informative and interesting. It attracted about 40 people from all around this community (guessing, I didn't count).

My notes are just quick points that I jotted down at the meeting. If you have any of your own comments or corrections, please feel free to reply below.

Note: You can view the huge versions of the images by clicking on them. The fine details may still be hard to read.
